The 2.7 is still a very trustworthy engine, I run a 2.7 in my Commercial Van and run it on 95% cooking oil all year round without any real issues on a single tank and a heat exchanger plumbed in, keep any eye on my project thread below and you'll see my heated Eckes heated Fuel Filter fitted very soon with a nice little electric pump to prime it too with a 1 way valve in line (idea stolen from Bigbunny2007)

I'm only recommending the 3.0 over the 2.7 as I've recently purchased one for my Grandad and it's beautiful to drive, seems a bit more responsive with the horses and a lot quieter, no engine chatter as you get with the old style IDI 2.7 block

Yeah I read your thread I could of bought a 3.0 this weekend but I wanted to check with you lot as almost every review site refers to this site for top advice etc. I have noticed at work that gallons of used cooking oil is just thrown away could it be cleaned and used, I do fancy a 3.0l though. The said car has gone now typical

Depends how good the "feedstock" is mate, some stuff is that good that it can just be filtered down to 1 micron and de-watered and poured in other stuff will have nasties in it and will take a significant amount of time to get ready to use.

I went the whole hog at one point and learned to make 3 stage titrated B100 BioDiesel using Methanol and Potassium Hydroxide, I had a a processor, drywash tower, venturi and it was not neccasary for the Terrano at all, but at least if I switch vehicles in future I know I'll be able to just purchase all the kit again and start brewing



With some fine tuning, the 2.7 can be ran on near enough neat vegetable oil all year round, if you do go for the 2.7 and venture down that route I've got that much info I could bore you to sleep

Hi welcome aboard, I've owned the 2.7 since 2002 until recently when it was written off. They are pretty bomb proof engines and you should get around 32mpg if you drive like a vicar
As said 3.0litre is a bit more refined though Ive not driven one yet. I'm in the market for another truck and I'm not put off a 2.7 and I've noticed the 3.0litre is a bit more money too. I found the auto 2.7 to be less economical but a great drive nonetheless.

I would like to thank you all for your advice and a warm welcome your site deserves it's awesome reputation.
Why would someone remove the front prop of a 3.0 terrano?? What is worst case and probable scenario.
I joined a vw club a few years ago when I bought a b5 passat welcome was warmish, last year I considered another land rover so joined club they were rude from start.

If it's standard and not been modded at all, the 3.0 was usually only fitted to the later square headlight (mk4) which also had fixed hubs as standard, this means that even when 4WD isn't engaged the front prop will be spinning.

My money will be on the UJ's or Union Joints will have worn out on the prop itself and needed swapping as they were making a noise, that's best case scenario.

It could also point to issues with the driveshafts, it's possible that the CV's are disintegrating and clunking etc when cornering.

Worst case scenario, the front diff has gone, could have been neglected and not had fluid replaced and gone bang, could also be a problem with the transfer box on the gearbox, I've only ever known of one snap it's chain but that was a real real off road workhorse on a farm.

Get them to put the front prop back on so you can see what it's doing for yourself, anyone worth their salt genuinely trying to shift the vehicle without trying to pull the wool over your eyes should do that, it's only 8 bolts

The later Terranos I think from around 2001 have fixed front hubs rather than autlocking hubs. The 3.0litre will be the fixed hub model. The uj's didn't have grease nipples on the later. With fixed hubs the front transmission including propshaft is turning all the time un like auto locking. Dozens of threads on the front hubs. My 05 plate truck had a worn out front propshaft, the uj's were shot but also they have a sliding joint on the shaft itself which was worn and had movement. The one you saw could very well of suffered this same problem or maybe removed to cover up another fault. I replaced mine from an earlier LWB terrano and had no problems at all though I know some members have spoken about different lengths of front propshaft. Who knows maybe I was just lucky and got the correct replacement.

That would obviously be the logical thing to do as it's already off probably leaning up the guys shed, if the UJ's show no sign of wear, I'd ask for it to be re-attached to the truck before the test drive so you could investigate whilst driving.

If it's not on the truck, there is no way I'd even consider going to see it as he'd have no way of testing the 4WD, and without 4WD it's about as useful as his van for his fishing trips
