Back in July I drove a good way up the old coach road from St Johns in the Vale to Dockray - open to 4x4s but quite rough.
This got me to a place to take off spot on Clough Head without too much effort (though still quite a climb for me these days).

Very pictureque at this time of year. My kids loved the railway to Ravenglass. Boats used to sell fish to tourists there but it's too close to Sellerfield for comfort. David.

Yes that's me.
I live in Tideswell.
I've done maybe 2000 more miles and the bearing is much the same.
I do believe it is quietest with the vehicle pointing uphill - like yours was when you were trying to demonstrate it and it was quiet.

I just plan to drive it until it conks out then think about an exchange box.

There aren't that many lanes we can get up to launch from - there's a private one on the Blorenge (Abergavenny) that the hang/para gliding club owns. We often ferry a lot of gliders up there for competitions. A few others in Wales where we get permissions off farmers. With the farmers permission we also drive up Moelfre - the one that Hugh Grant walked up a hill and came down a mountain in the film.
This one in the lakes is good and there is another one at Troutbeck, and one up Farleton Knott overlooking the M6 at Lancaster. Then there is a really rough one an Cross Fell near Penrith that I want to try - not been there for 20 years. Used to go up it in a mates Shogun. Most of these are private lanes where the flying club has negotiated access.

I've driven the Old coach road & it was a nice drive shame about the weather on that day as it really limited the views is there still that bomb hole 1/2 way along the lane ? managed to dent my fuel tank going through it on my last T2 & that was a SWB would hate to do that section in my LWB would prob get stuck from hooking up the rear end

How far along is that bomb hole?
That day I thought the wind would be more north and drove toward Wolf Craggs, which is flown in a north wind, coming in from the east end of the coach road.
Finding the wind westerly I considered trying to drive all the way through, but instead turned round and went the long way round to come up from the west.

Sounds like that was a wise decision!

The tarn, would be very cold in there!

And it was.
Any more than 5 mins in there even on a red hot day would give you hyperthermia

I think it was more towards the Dockray end was quite a few years ago when I drove it with a group all I can remember was it was a low point on the lane & either side of the track was bog land. I know this section has been repaired quite a few times due to the bomb hole getting deeper & eating up 4x4's. Got to drive it again tho but hopefully when the weather is nice so we can take in the views of Blencathera also want to walk to the top of Blencathera again whilst my legs will still let me
