Hi all,
I have Just picked up a 03 Terrano 3.0 Sport for the wife 3 days ago? First 4x4 for long time (had a fourtrack about 15years ago).
Just need some advice on a few issues if anyone can help?
It has a knock/grind? type of noise and judder from the rear while reversing with lock on?
The other thing that may just be normal??
For the first day the wife had a good laugh criticizing my gear selection and jerky driving?
until she drove it?
We both difficult to drive at low speeds 20-30 mph when going through villages etc which is most of our driving.
the problem is although it goes like a train through the gears at revs if you try and drive at cruising speed in third it struggles/vibrates until you boot it then it takes off fine, but at village type speed you find you have to keep changing in to second and have the revs up to keep it smooth which means constant gear changing and a jerky ride?
it feels like 2nd and third need to be a closer ratio??
Sorry if I'm not clear as you can tell I am not very technical??

Hi Jay, welcome aboard fella.
Sounds like you have to get used to gear selections, it may need a good service including the gear oil.
Your noise is probably the steering stops at the front, have a look in Quick Links at the Downloads section. There is a workshop telling you how to replace the steering stops, you dont need to replace just blob grease on them. There two on either side and the grease will last a good few months and you don't have to jack it up to get to them.

welcome.......... yes thats a terrano, they dont like going slow and the engine is not very flexible, this causes a lot of vibration. third gear is useless around town, you can just about make the 30mph without a fuss. I love the car but this does make it annoying to drive in town, me? I just keep it in 2nd. regards bri
I thought the 3l was better than the 2.7 for this, I must have presumed it was better...

steering stops just grease them up, no need to change them unless you got one missing like Jim said in the download section.

I have a 97 2.7tds, mine is fine to be honest, around town and villages. 2nd/third is ok, although I had a Fourtrak not too long ago, so was used to that (neither 4x4 is a patch on my Mazda MX6-V6 engine, can go round towns and villages in fith at less that 1k revs and its smooth!!
as for the terrano, had mine about 2 weeks now, I find gear selection OK, maybe a tiny bit fiddly, but i fully expect that of a 4x4 (although nmine is better than works Shogun). I would go with previous advice-have a service especially gear oil, that will make a difference, perhaps check idle, accelerator etc, but to be honest, with out knowing history, most likley yours is fine-its just I dont get the problems you describe!

I am sure we will get used to it! we are driving 2 other cars at the moment so it just feels strange?
I will get the grease out tonight and give them steering stops a seeing too?
it did sound like it was comming more from the rear axle than anywhere else but I will start with the stops and hopfully that will sort it?
It had a service before I picked it up but is there anywere I would find info on the gear oil etc,

I have had my terrano over three years and have towed all over europe, the gear change is perfect its just the ratios. I had two cars for a while when I first bought it I did find I preferred the petrol estate for around town, but now I only have one Im used to it....bri

Hi Jay and welcome,
The nosie you hear from your rear axel when reversing with full lock on may well be your rear slip diff oil needing changing (something often overlooked in servicing) esp. if not done at a main dealer! I had this problem recently (2005 model with 28k on it)
Simple test is:
Find a nice open carpark, in 2wd full lock on and reverse to see if you can hear a noise, or if the diff 'feels' like its tightening....
Put it into 4wd, and try the same thing.... if it is the diff this will feel like you are trying to reverse up a hill as the diff locks....
(Put it back into 2wd and go forwards to 'unwind' it).
Zippy's manual will tell you which oil it is - something like 80W-90-LSD of the top of my head, easy to change and you'll need about 3lts, change to oil, run it for 1000k miles then change again....
Should sort it! :thumbs

Greasing the steering stops seems to have worked!!!
tested it quickly and No more noise!

I will test it properly tommorow after a run so fingers crossed.
I will also get the rear diff oil changed for good mesure while I'm at it, it's done 55,000 miles and although it has just had a full service the servicing history stamps in the book are few and far between!
I have also noticed the rear looks very high on mine? the gap between the arch and tyre is twice as high on the rear as it is on the front? would this be normal? can't find any others local to compare with?

Have a search around there are one or two threads regarding ride height, Be aware that there are different body trims to affect distance between centre of hub and body work. Some tend to look higher at the back for some reason, mines a bit low. Possible that somebody may of wound the front torsion bars down but why:nenau
Good idea to change rear diff oil, make sure it is the proper LSD Oil though, also think about gear oil too perhaps.
If the grease has done the trick, just remember after a few months depending on how much use and weather you'll probably need to do it again but as you've seen it's no hardship is it. Does this mean you've saved your first tenner?:clap:clap:clap

Saved a lot more than a tenner for sure!!
Was hoping to get the rear the same as the front rather than the other way round? my 5 year old loves the "truck":thumbs as she calls it but does struggle climbing up? short ars# like her dad:doh

LOL....worth leaving a bit of differential as she drops her arse a bit when towing.........but you don't need much.

Am I reading this right. If I raise the front a touch then it lowers the back?
So if that's right if I lower my front then the back will raise?

Ive gotta 2005 LWB T2..... back is a good 1.5-2 inches higher at the back....
dont even drop too much with a caravan on the rear.
Pretty sure there ment to be like that.... and if it aint broke, I leave well alone!!! :lol

My measurements were from floor to arch trim. All my T2's have been like this
My six yr old has mastered getting in and out to 'big-black' (hence the name) .... 11 week old puppy aint got a cat in hells chance though!!!! :lol

3" sounds a bit excessive.
If you look in the manual there is a kosher measurement to work to, expressed as a differential between the heights of two points at the inner and outer ends of the front wishbone. If your front wishbones look fairly flat then the front is too low. Outer end should be around two inches lower than the inner end.....the penalty of having the ride too low at the front is incorrect tyre wear.....and less ground clearance for the offroaders.
