Is it just me that hates it when you have workmen coming to do jobs on your house. Theres always something thats just not right:nenau

Today we had the faulty patio doors replaced with some french doors. Great looking reasonably neat job with the silicone. Then I decided to have a good feel around them for drafts but no the doors are sealed perfect. Until I got to floor level, blowing a gale underneath the frame. Suspect its coming from the cavity but seriously would it of taken much to pull the carpet back and seal the gap and tell us not to put the carpet back until it's dry.

Jeez this happens with everything we ever have done, is it this country that has very poor standards:doh

It sounds petty and a tube of silicone and it'll be sorted but when I've paid almost 1500 quid it sticks in my throat that I've got to finish the job off.

I'm afraid there's a lot of monkeys out there claiming other peoples skills
I see the other side of it when I give quotes to people, "Oh you're expensive" :doh I don't charge by the hour and always give a price for the job. Final payment on satisfactory completion.
"Can you do it cheaper for cash" ?
No ta , bye.

cowboys, many of them around, I would go with makitfit's suggestion, pay only when finished and satisfied, that is how I work, Rick

Yes very true, unfortunately these days the cowboys now prey on your emotions, they make people hand over cash often before work has even started

Money for materials right  :doh

Well it was a reputable local company and in fairness other than the bottom of the frame on the inside its not such a bad job. It just feels like everytime we have any work done there's always something that isn't right. They only asked for a deposit before the job and wife hadn't noticed anything was wrong before paying the balance.
Just seems like the standard of workmanship these days is possibly not what I'd expect or may be Im a victor meldrew:lol

tbh jim , id ring them up , thank them for the work etc , but say you are a bit disappointed , perhaps it was an oversight on their part etc ? .... be polite

I hear exactly what you are saying Pete and you are correct of course. Rather than having to arrange time off work to be in the house it's easier just to get atube of silicone lift carpet at that edge and do it. It'll be fixed by tomorrow I just find it a frustration that people don't seem to take care anymore. It's like we have boiler cover that just happens to cover the radiators. A radiater sprung a leak so we called them out. A replacement was ordered but when it arrived it was too small and didn't have the grill across the top like the rest of the radiators. Ended up having to fight on the phone to get a correct size radiator with the grill. The chaps came to fit the correct radiator and yeah simple enough job but again different mounting points so they had to drill more holes which is fair. Trouble the old holes were left behind consealed but because they were in a timber framed dorma they let a draft in. What cost would a blob of silicone cost. I can fit radiators but because it was covered it was a free repair so why bother.

Hi Jim, sorry if my reply sounded like a poke. I may have had a wine or two :)
As what Pete said really, it's a shame and probably an oversight. Still ring them and explain what's happened. They may well say sorry and pop round on their way home from work to sort it for you . Save you taking time off etc.
Good luck :thumbs

Nah didnt noticed you typed owt funny Pete so don't worry about it. I've decided on a plan of action anyway. I'm going to take carpet gripper up and then it'll be easier to get into. Then the silicone I've got in the garage so it'll be sorted later today and dried by tomorrow then carpet folded back into place.
I just judge others by my standards and how I work when I'm doing jobs for other people.
