Highway Code

Has any one else spotted the rule 250 that states motors under 1.5 tonnes need no lights parked on a public road, but over this then needs lights all night, LWB T2 is 1.8 tonnes, or have I missed something, Rick

No, you have not missed something, that is what it says...

The only thing is, if I remember correctly, the Highway code is not actually law, and although it does quote the law, some things can be ignored without actually breaking the law. The problem is, trying to work out which bits are "Best Practice", and which bits are "Law", can be difficult.

isnt it still based on unladen weight.

these days so many works vans parked at homes that likely breach it
along with growth in suv/4x4s.

I do use the lights sometimes were think more risk.

also used to be all vehicles on roads over 30mph.

battery eater, be better if had leds.

ah fair play sir. Its always good to brush up on your knowledge, I must admit, I am quite lapse these days, the rules are all changing. But then again, it is a dog eat dog world out there, ruthless London drivers..

Well it states vehicles must have lights, mine has lights, doesn't say that they have to be switched on though...:augie
Don't think that defence will stand up in court though...:lol:lol

Cars, goods vehicles not exceeding 1525 kg unladen weight, invalid carriages, motorcycles and pedal cycles may be parked without lights on a road (or lay-by) with a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) or less if they are

at least 10 metres (32 feet) away from any junction, close to the kerb and facing in the direction of the traffic flow
in a recognised parking place or lay-by. Other vehicles and trailers, and all vehicles with projecting loads, MUST NOT be left on a road at night without lights.

Well thats a bit silly to say the least..

You'd more than likely get your car broken into if you left lights on it.

I just found this from a police website, thought it might help if not a little contradictory.

Q386: What are the rules for parking a car at night?


Between sunset and sunrise all motor vehicles parked on a road must be parked with the nearside of the vehicle as near to the kerb as possible and the vehicle cannot be parked within 10m of a junction without any lights on.

There are exceptions,

■Parking within 10 metres of a junction with lights on
■Parking on a one way street
■Vehicles dropping off or picking up passengers
■Vehicles connected with emergency services
■Vehicles connected with building work, repairs to road, cars, sewers, gas pipes etc
If the road does not have a 30mph limit then parking lights must be used when parking a vehicle in the hours of darkness.

A heavy goods vehicle (over 7.5 tonnes) must be lit and must not cause an obstruction if parked on a road during the hours of darkness.

A failure to comply with these rules will lead to a fixed penalty notice being issued.

back in the 70,s I used to frequent a club which was on a main road and the police were always coming in about cars parked on the road with no lights on, so I had a nifty little light that clipped on to the gutter of my 1974 Audi 80 . it had one bulb about 10w and two lenses clear facing forward and red facing rear and it plugged in to the cigarette lighter. I'm sure it would be easy to rig something up similar using LEDs if necessary

gramatically is the 1525kg refering only to goods vehicles or and cars.

theres corners near me i refuse to use when exiting estate due to vans parked
on junction, nevermind 10m such is obstruction to view traffic on main road.

yes they were common years ago, but many modern motors have a parking light system that if you put the indicator stalk to the off side it lights only the off side side lights with ignition off, Rick
