Hi all, so today i paid the almighty Rick a visit with the hope of re indexing the front torsion bar, after some debate we decided against the front torsion indexing due to stress.

So with the leak off pipes easily tackled we started chatting about mods on here, I mentioned makeitfit's steel bumper, at which point rick mentioned he had a special set of bumpers in led of a lick of paint. Needless to say I snatched them up :D

The rear one has been fitted to get me home and I'm returning to get the front one done later :thumb2

As usual rick, you are a legend :sly

Yeah, needs a luck of paint and a quick tidy up.

I also need a rubber grommet for the drivers side rear, any ideas where?

Just to be on the safe side you might be better taking it to show an mot station and asking if they'll pass. Those rear wheel s look a little exposed to me.

Think he'll be ok Jim, if you check Adz's pic thread he took his rear bumper off completely. Think the only thing they're bothered about is sharp edges that folk could cut/stab themselves on (we'll ignore the question of why they'd be that close to the rear of the truck in the first place)

Looking good Alex, remember you'll need a winch in your front bumper to make it road legal :thumbs

That's good then, it would be bad news to of binned your old bumpers and then fail mot. Enjoy your modding Alex.

You'll have to get the rear number plate remounted now:augie you should be fine with the MOT & boys in blue as the tyres are covered at the top by the arches:thumb2

how does that work then? Rick

Under EU regs a steel front bumper is frontal protection and therefore not road legal but fit a winch and it becomes a winch bumper which counts as equipment and is road legal.

I'm saying nothing! :augie

Sooo, this has got me thinking. How flexible is this rule? Obviously my Tirfor winch connects to the bumpers but lives in the boot? :nenau

Or literally tie the Tirfor to my new front bumper to be :lol

I've just had a "great" though

Im gonna get the exact definition of "winch" and see what I can get away with.

Example - if I could just have 1m of cable with a hook sitting on the ring id be laughing.

Don't really wanna buy a 300 quid elec winch.

Pop some extra rear lighting in those circular holes will help the look of it mate.

I'd cut back the over rider bit so it's narrower. then move the lights outward. that'll let you mount the main bar higher so it looks better just under the door line. Even more clearance then and it'll look like it's meant to be there :D
The grommets should easily be found in a scrap yard ;)

My understanding is that in a winch bumper the winch bit is integral/mounted to the bumper, so either incorporating the cradle or at the very least the fairlead. :nenau

A winch is a winch bud, I don't think there's any ambiguity there that you could use and even if there was do you want to be trying to argue it in the case of an accident? Also remember you need to inform your insurance about the change of bumper's rear and front.

Nah, that Tirfor winch is a bad boy! Rick was checking it out yesterday and he was impressed with it.

I'm wondering if I put a cable in the front for "winching" if it would count :nenau

Would you believe the rear door only just opens!! So no more lifting there. Are you on about cutting the corners off?

:rolleyes :Bud that's pretty much no different from having a cable on a front recovery point - a winch bumper has a winch, it's in the name! :doh

Remember bud your talking about making your vehicle non-road legal in the eyes of the law.

Even if you don't get stopped think of what would happen if you had an accident as I bet your insurance company would wash their hands and so you'd have no insurance never mind anything else :nenau

Up to you at the end of the day but I wouldn't be risking it

Right, cleared this up, spoke to the insurance company as a "maybe" question :augie

He could not answer me so spoke to underwriter, who also had no idea. They said they would call me back. 4 hours later they call, and gave me the good news :D

I explained in detail what the bumpers were, I made the joke and said as I work in the trade I wouldn't claim anyway, he uh. Made a good joke back and said "well I think the other car would get written off anyway" :lol

I told them to consider them fitted as I'm gonna do it ASAP :sly

Also got call recorded :thumb2

Well if your underwriter is happy for them to be fitted then all is good:thumbs With your rear bumper you might be able to trim off the top part of the old bumper to use as an infill above the steel bumper if you wanted a bit more of a factory look to the rear corners

I must admit the look has grown on me, at first i thought, hmmm looks pretty extreme and a little strange but ive gotta admit I love it :D

Alex bud just 'cos they work for the insurance company doesn't mean they can give you an all clear as far as the law is concerned :doh or that the insurance company will definitely pay out if your vehicle is found to be non road legal.

There's plenty info on the net about it so I'm not gonna say any more I just hope you don't have to put that recorded phonecall to the test for the sake of buying a cheap winch to stick on the bumper (nobody said you had to use it).

I think unfortunately that's what I'm gonna have to do. Even if its a crappy hand wind winch :p

Obviously hidden behind the bumper

:thumb2 behind/back of the bumper is the best place for them anyway just mind a slot for a fairlead of some sort so it at least looks usable.
