Hi, i'm new to this forum I have recently bought a terrano 3.0di which has very bad diesel knock and the EM light on. It also stalls when pulling away, I belive the advance solenoid to be stuck I have read the code with a launch which points to the pump. What is confusing me is that when its warm and has been switched off then when restarted, the EM light goes out and has lots of power briefley, then back to being slow and noisey. I should also mention that was much worse before and is much better after fitting a fuel filter.

What I was wondering is could this be caused by low fuel pressure? Could I simply put on a lift pump? Or if the pump is scrap will I need to reprogramme a second hand one when I get one or can I use the module of my exsisting pump? Could this be caused by the module, but I think this is a mechanical problem?

Any help would be greatly apreciated

Thanks Marc

could be air in system known common problem is metal fuel pipes in rear arch corrode and allow air in if air in fuel can up set the advance solenoid as pressure will drop in the pump cheap fix if it is the problem also was it a cheap fuel filter as they have been kown to allow air in to:thumbs

a large section of the pipes have been replaced with rubber before i bought it the return pipe has started leaking recently at the sender but didnt think the return would matter as its tank end i thought about air but the primer only takes 1 to 2 pumps to go hard is this normal? im in no way a diesel expert just started learning about them since buying this lol im going to fit a lift pump anyway after reading about the vp44 problems in the states big problems on dodge trucks i belive kills the pump if the pressure drops below 5 psi. my biggest fear is that the pump is scrap because i hate spending money lol can i get blink codes on this year of truck?

codes yes paper clip and away u go just look at the workshop manual in the quick link u will have the white or black 16 pin under the fuse box just short pins 1 and 8 which should be the row of pins which are the widest part of the plug on mine its the bottom row __________

hope that makes sense:thumbs

I would suggest you start from scratch with this one. What smoke do you have when under fault conditions? Could also be an EGR or throttle body issue, or delaminated hose.

Firstly install a length of clear hose between filter and Inj pump with a nice loop in it and look for air. Repair & replace accordingly.

By all means install a lift pump (1bar max) at the REAR by the tank. Ive found an improvement in top end performance with it.

If no air found, read, then clear codes, test drive and see which ones return.

The vp44 works slightly differently in terms of the advance system, but still requires good regulated case pressure.

If it all points to a fault within the pump get it re-conned by diesel bob. Dont mess about.

I would be looking at the engine control system as a whole rather than immediately blaming the pump...

Thanks for the help I think I will start from scratch, I will check to see what colour the smoke is. I haven't run it for a while I presume that the colour of smoke can determine if it's fuel or oil. I shall put on some clear hose and fit a lift pump, what kind of pump are you running by the way? What is the purpose of the loop? just out of curiosity and I will get the codes out manualy.

thanks for all the help still very stuck with my issues have put on clear hose as timbo mentioned no air have also carried out the fuel return mod as air can get in through the banjo bolts on the leak off pipe, car runs much quiter the mill light stayed off untill i re started it which is a vast improvment as its always on. i have the egr pipe off,i read the codes which was 5 long then 2 long then 7 short which i dont know if its 27 ecm then thats as confusing as the pump code. going to by pass the egr this weekend also white smoke which indicates fuel burn any ideas? on a more positive note i fixed my fuel sender unit for nothing

just thought i would update on my issues found that the injector spill pipes were leaking into the oil causing the oil level to rise which was drawing in air and for some reason on the 3 liter returns back into the inlet side of the fuel pump so £10 for some banjo washers and a t peice to route the spill line into the fuel return and blank off the inlet.
so finally got a fully functioning 4x4
