towing caravan yesterday

loss of power

engine light wont clear

seemed to be in a limp mode

extreme version of power cutting on throttle, previously
could ease off and reset and away again, but this time
nothing.

also seemed to suffer a momentary stall, a judder like
clutch had slipped or had dropped clutch .

came back on a flat bed with caravan in tow.

waiting diagnostics, due to age of car, mechanics plug in
wont read, needs nissan software or wire across pins.

wondering if egr or airflow. be game over if its pump.

you got the 3litre and the pistons crack on them... i hope thats not the case.

i think it piston 1 and 3

in garage last night, was reving nicely, plenty of boost.

hope its just airflow.

its been flat since before the hgf and piston rebuild.

throw over boost error solo and towing in certain load and
open throttles.

think that if is low on power is having to work harder, so
can get hotter too.

seriously cheesed off.

reckon 3.0 is when its good its very good but when its bad

its shite!

the thing is you cant win cos the 2.8 is gutless... i couldnt aford to risk a 3 litre as the repair bills would have crippled me so i had to opt for the limp 2.8

buy a t2

well had a tdi 2.7 t2 before this 4 happy years.

but for a stupid 50/50 write off would still have.

did want bit more interior space troll has but yes
already eyeing up replacement t2s.

seen x reg mk3s for what i paid for engine rebuild.

still want to believe troll could be stunning but i'm
never truely relaxed driving it, always listening for
stuff and looking at dash for warning lights.

know a t2 wouldnt be as good towing ratio wise
but when we got the caravan was more than happy
with the t2, so guess would be again. certainly
more nimble round town and off roading on
local narrow lanes....

what about a 3.0 T2 :augie

what about it?

tbh getting paranoid now about the zd motor.

i realise that by time got in terrano was sorted,
nice to think i'm still part of the refining process
with the trol then.

i suspect the 2.7tdi t2 is as good as a 3.0 tdi trol
in power to weight ratios.

though acknowledge the trol pulled 'van better at
first.

3.0 t2 would be very zippy, just wary of incresase
maintenace times, the HGF was 7 hours on 2.7,
but 13 hours on zd....

Paul/lac has suggested 3.0 as well. just hope can
sort trol really, got to remember it was superb 2
years ago.

Just drop a 4.2D in to it problem solved!!

now that sounds like a plan.

think trucks this size should have big straight 6s

like the toyota amazon land cruisers or a nice
v8!

no substitute for cubes and all that.

oh engineer has just rang, thinks its ecu, trying
to get a loan/swap unit to test, perhaps a repair
if not.

guess it could be root cause of all my error codes
even the turbo over boost...

cleaned MAF

engineer rangme yesterday

can pickit up.

in 4 days has read codes!

his readers didnt work as at this age arent generic
so needs either nissan reader or good old wire across
pins.

got various codes out though seemed to be using r20
2.7tdi list, which is common but misses out some zd
stuff like 95 or 0905, over boost which was present oh
and 28/0208 over heat.

said should run over weeken and bring back tuesday,
despite knowing our 2 week hol is passing by and
having got as far as i could have with a wire and would
have guessed from state when recovered last tuesday.

So took it home, then out for a spin, powered out of a
roundabout, nothing radical, check light on., generally
feeling flat. at home googled 0905 and ozzy trol site
came up. consenciuos there was start with MAF!

last night we had maf out cleaned and test run does
seem better, not flying but better, so testing with
caravan today, fortunately sheffiled is built on 7 hills
with a supporting cast of many more so dont have to
go to far....

Sounds like the MAF to me on Patrol 4x4 they recon its MAF failure that can cause the ZD to grenade in the 1st place.

The ZD also has a MAP sensor that can cause issues.

MAF's for ZD are not expensive and in my opinion cleaning the things is a total watse of time and effort. If you do get a new MAF don't buy a no name one from fleabay as I got one for my 2.8 and it lasted 5 mins.

:thumb2

was the maf and the other sensor in the intercooler,

but not my problem any more, weighed it against a
newer terrano. kina miss it but no the worry and
heartache, and always missed the old t2 more so
seemed obvious to fast foreward to another.

thanks for the support Alan over the trol years.

Always new you would get another T2. Would get another myselt but not a 2.7. I got a 2.8 Trol due to the early 3.0DI grenading. Have done a few mods the mine and its now on a par power wise with a 3.0ltr and I love straight 6 engines. Enjoy your new toy

I am trying to understand the diesel engines available, Are the engines as follows...

Patrol 2.8TDi 4cyl (?)
Patrol 3.0 TDi 4cyl (Pistons can crack)

Terrano 2 2.7 TD 4cyl (Basic electronic control systems, lower power and higher consumption, no intercooler)
Terrano 2 2.7 TDi 4 cyl (More complicated control systems, therefore less reliable, higher power and lower consumption, intercooler)
Terrano 2 3.0 TDi 4 cyl (Piston problem sorted when this engine fitted to T2)

Anyone care to update above with further information...

I will try to find the standard bhp and Torque figures.
