You're probably going to laugh at this but I think it's a cool cheap solution to a problem.

While out playing the other day I managed to rip off one of the rear plastic wheel arch extension things.

The main reason it came off so easy was the fact that the original mounting points have suffered from the attack of the rust monkey, only one of the original fixing points was now left.

The solution was a length of 15mm foam insulation, the sort that's used to insulate copper pipe in houses.... just bunged a load of roof gutter goo into it and pushed it onto the offending arch and a quick lick of matt Black paint I found in the garage to finish.... total cost of the job £6.80!!

Cracking idea, I banged a front one going through an incerdibly narrow set of gates recently, but was not going to do anything about it till MOT time. If it comes off now, i can try that (no rust on mine though, just skint)

Where are from, would that be an NI number plate or private. If your mainland UK, we are running some green lane trips if your interested. Judging by the tyres you maybe?

Cameraman

I live here in the UK and the tyres are in preparation for a trip to the Sahara next month.

Wheel arches on Y60 are a PITA. I have cut all mine out and rewelded new metal in including the captured sections to screw plastic arches into. I wont tell how long it took 8O . Good luck on your trip.

Alex, I have done the trip to Morocco (see here) and have now brought another Y60 that I,m currently prepping for next years African trip... sadly it too has all four arches that need sorting. How long did it take you, are we talking months.

Whoa..nice truck mate! Weeks it took for arches. I marked out the semi circular vertical surface on car with a white chalk then put tracing paper over it and penciled where the white mark was (outwith the rust areas an onto good metal) and traced the right angled crease of wing
This gave me the crescent section to cut out of new steel and first piece of the repair section. I took it out with a plasma but a good jigsaw is prolly better. You add another strip (2") at right angles to follow the bottom of your first section and weld it on......this will hold the plastic wheelarch fixings.Once you have cut the section out of wheelarch offer it up to the new one using a mark for datum point of both............ mark the holes underneath and cut out any excess metal as you only need the holes and a small return. Stitch weld your two piece section to the jigsaw cut that was made on the truck..you can seam weld it a bit at a time then grind and fill
There is a lot of faffing as metal has to be teased a bit to get contours......welding filling and paint does the rest. There`s nothing looks worse than rusty arches is there? Maybe a panel beater could make a proper flanged item but I aint no panel beater  . I priced front wings from Nissan and they were £180 each.........I thought they would have been more. Betcha the back ones are..

bat u got twins on drive now mate is she another 4.2? long time since u been aound hows tricks?

Blimey Alex, fair play to you sir but that sounds like a awful lot of work if they are only £180 each new.... ah I've just noticed you're from Scotlandshire

Yes Jace, the one at the back is the one that we took to Morocco, it's chassis is not as good as the newer one. Although they are both the same vehicle (4.2 none turbo) the older one has a lot more low down power, it's almost impossible to stop, in first gear on tick over even if I apply the brakes it just keep going... but the newer one is smoother top end.

Yeah £180 for fronts and prolly £ 250 for rears plus paint would cost close to a grand...........FOR WINGS? I put 2"spring lift with Pro Comps plus 33inch tyres and alloys on with that money 8)
