Can you help diagnose a fault on the above. When motoring it will start to misfire badly and throw out black smoke then finally cutting out and will only restart after standing for a while. It will then drive for maybe 15miles and txhen will do the same again. Thank Dave

Is this a Bosch or a Zexel Injector Pump?

Are you getting the engine management light come on when it starts to act up??

might be a blocked mini filter will need cleaning if yours has one

From past experience that usually causes bogging down and grey smoke that stings your eyes!!!

I've had black smoke coupled with the other symptoms the OP is getting on a Bosch Terrano before when the IP plug has a loose/corroded wire, once re-crimped it was fine.

I was thinking Crankshaft Position Sensor especially with it been fine until it warms up and then won’t start until it’s cooled down a little.

I go with Jim, Rick

Stands a chance that it's that I suppose, more likely than a damaged IP wire!!

I have a spare CKP in the garage, sure I was asked for one recently but whatever one the person wanted I had the opposite :doh

Think it might be the Hitachi one I have :nenau

Ongoing intermittent misfire

Thank you all - So far I have changed Crankshaft Position Sensor, Fuel cut-off valve,Main fuel filter, Mini-filter in pump, all leak-off pipes. My small diagnostic tool sometimes says Number 6 Injector leaking (there is only 4!) or Number 2 Injector leaking or Fuel cut-off valve circuit low. I have jumped straight from the battery to the fuel cut-off valve but no change.I suspect my diagnostic tool is not up to the job? Anymore suggestions would be appreciated.

Throw your tool in the bin :lol :doh

Get yourself down in the footwell and under the dash near the fusebox under where you right knee goes, you should see either a 16pin or 14 pin plug based on what type you have, come back and I'll tell you which 2 pins you need to short in the plug.

This will cause your EML light on the dash to start blinking in diagnostics, a long flash = 5 and a short flash = 1, count the blinks and refer to the table here and you should get your answer mate

Terrano misfire

Dear All,
Thank you everyone for your input.
MIL light is still on with misfire very similar to that whichI have experienced on petrol engines. The injector pump is a fly by wire type with a black box bolted on the engine side of the pump - No 1 injector has a wire attached. I am keen to do some diagnosing with the aid of the paper clip, unfortunately my DLC is a straight block with 16 connections as apposed to the one Tool Box has displayed which has fourteen. So I am a bit nervous about linking out anything at the moment until I have further information in regard to the DLC. At the moment I am checking the ball and spring situated under the mini filter.

This should clarify the DLC connections:

Terrano misfire problems

Hi All,
I am still having intermittent misfiring on my Y reg Diesel Terrano. Thank you all for your recent help. To date I have changed Maf Sensor, Crank position sensor,
Fuel shup-off solonoid, Ignition switch, Main filter, Pump overflow valve, Cleaned mini filter and changed all leak-off pipes. With the help of the trouble code identification sheet from Toolbox it still flags up 34 (injector needle sensor) and 47 (CKP incorrect signal) although I have fitted a new Bosch one. My cheap Autel 319 still insists there its a problems with the fuel shut-off solenoid circuit - I am now pausing for thought. I am thinking of running new wires but have no circuit diagram - can anyone help me with a one of these? The situation is now reaching a critical stage, my wife (who hates the Terrano) and threaten to set light to it, has now started to build a small fire!!!

Fuel Shut Off Solenoid should log a 21, I had that due to using veg and when my head seal started to weep I lost internal pump pressure which is what triggers is apparently. I swapped my Injector Pump and the problem went away :thumb2
