Hi there my wifes 96 Mistral auto wanders all over the road
it seems to do it if you are driving along normally and accelorate or lift your foot off the gas.

it feels like one of the wheels is driving and the other not and you get the feeling the car is trying to twist.

i have just had it MOT.D and replaced the droplinks front and rear as well as 2 bottom balljoints and the antiroll bar bushes.

could this be something to do with drive shafts etc.
i am at my wits end and consider the car dangerous for her to drive.
if you are going round a bend and it changes gear it can be a bit hairy.

idont know much about driveshafts freewheeling hubs etc but i have tried almost everything else

HELP.

Can you fel if it seems to be from the front or the back.

If back - check te link bar bushes and also the panard rod bushes - the axle could be moving back and forth or side to side on its mounts if these ae worn.

If front - check lower rear wishbone bushes, also all the ball joints, top and bottom wishbone ones and all the ones in the steering system - theres 6 in the steerig alone. Also check the condition of the idler arm bushes.

That lot should keep you busy for a while.

it oes feel like the rear in fact she says it fels like back axle moving

as it does it in 2 wheel drive when load is put on/taken off it would make sense.
not sure what bushes you mean i have replaced the droplink ones what others do i need to check and are they easy to replace.

what are panard rod bushes?

any help or info please

Section RA - Rear Axle

Page 13 shows exploded diag of rear axle and all link bars etc.

Upper link
Lower Link
Panard rod

Are the ones to look at.

Pages 14 and 15 cover the bars and bushes.

TBH if you haven't got access to a press (and as you're asking what these are I'm guessing you don't) these may be beyond doing at home. You may be able to take the link bars off and take them to a local garage to have the old ones pressed out and new ones pressed in - use another car for te drive though.

First off need to establish if the bushes are worn, you'll need a lever, try to move them around on their mountng bolts, a very small amount of play should be possible but even this should require a fair amount of effort to compress the rubber - anymore and they are knackered.

Just click on the chapter headings within the manual or you may need to update your version of adobe reader - do a search for it with google if need be its a free download.

cheers

i went out and tried driving it in 4 wheel drive and it dont wander about the road so am convinced it is something at the back end just guessing but could it be anything to do with rear half shafts.

if this rain ever stops i may get outfor a look
its bad news when us scots are complainin about rain.
