We had an afternoon and evening out in Maidstone last Tuesday, and as the truck is now lifted, it won't fit in the park-n-ride, or the Multistories. Luckily, we know of a little carpark round by the police station, so headed over to it.

We found a parking space and I headed over to the meter, to check the prices and try and work out if I needed to rob my wife, or if I had enough money in my pocket. As I got to the Meter, there was a guy already standing there, looking very harassed, and huffing at his phone...

I asked him if it was all right to use the meter, as I did not want to push in front of him, especially as it is one of these meters you have to type your whole registration into, and the buttons run up and down, so none of the letters are where your mind expects them to be. He waved me on at the same time as he, with a final huff, puts his phone back into his pocket, and raises his arms in the air, turning around. I could see he was at boiling point, and just said "Everything ok".... Wow, that opened a can of worms....

Turns out, he had had the day from hell, he is a truck driver, and going around a bend on a country lane, met a Landrover towing a trailer coming the other way. The landrover was shifting, and unable to stop, so the lorry driver stuck the cab into the hedge, and waited for the bang. There was a nasty mangling of metal as he fully stopped, but the landrover carried on... When he checked, it had removed the rear O/S wheel arch and rear light cluster of the truck, but when he went to move, there was more graunching. He then discovered that in his haste to move over, he had stuffed the front step into a cut off tree stump, and wrecked that as well. He got the truck off the stump, and then had to use a jack to get the step away from the wheel, and while doing this, missed his delivery slot, so when he got the the site, had to wait 2 hours for another one. He called his boss, first time to tell him about the accident, and then to explain the delay, and being a nice kind understanding considerate boss, he got a real chewing out over messing the day up, and probably putting the truck out of commission until it was sorted.

On top of that, his boss said he would need to actually go to the police station to report the accident, as they would need a physical copy of the police report for their insurance blah blah. As he did not want to try and take, then park a truck in Maidstone, returned the truck to the yard, and then drove back into Maidstone in his own car to the police station. Because of all this, he was now very late home, and that in it's own right was a problem, as he had let someone else down.

Now, he needed £2 for parking, and only had £1.90 cash, and his phone had run out of credit while he was trying to pay via phone, so had really had it up to there with the day...

I passed him 10p, and you would have though he had won the lottery, he said it was the first nice thing that had happened all day.....

Who would have thought 10 pence could make such a difference to a persons day. I wish I could cheer everyone up that easily...

Anyway, I decided to spread a bit more Christmas Cheer, I decorated the truck, which has been fun, as I have had strangers waving to me, and Kids stopping dead to check it over...

If that's what you do to the poor truck, I hate to think how you have decorated the ferrets.

Went over to Thurrock today, on the M25 and it was fine... Usually 60mph is an ambition on the M25, but today it was running well, so sat at 70Mph no problem. It is held on with cable ties.

the s[are wheel mount has had some lift, is that in readiness of a bigger spare
or to ease hitching up?

any more info ?

The new caravan has one of those poxy stabiliser hitches... Stupid thing needs so much room over the hitch to be able to hitch up, hate the dam thing..

Anyway, one day I ended up with the car facing up hill, and the caravan facing down hill, and not enough clearance to get hitch handle up, so I could get the van off the back. That was the last straw, and I lifted the spare wheel carrier up out the way. Since I have boarded the rear window, and have the rear view camera on the top of the spare wheel, it's not a problem with rear visibility.

I went a bit over the top when I lifted it, and it is about 3 inches higher than it needs to be. Since then, I have also added a suspension lift, so before I next take the caravan back out, I think I will need to drop the towbar into the bottom holes as well, giving yet another 2 inches of clearance. Once I know exactly how much, I will drop it down a bit, as it does make it quite hard to have to lift the wheel up that high.

Basically, when I fitted the hard wheel cover, I had to space the carrier out from the door by an inch, as the wiper fouled it. To do this, I cut 2 x 1" square tubes to fit across the door between the carrier and the door, and used longer bolts to bolt back into the door making the whole thing sit an inch further out. Once we had this PITA towbar, I decided to lift the wheel up and to do this, I got a rectangular plate of 6mm aluminium checker plate, drilled it, so it would bolt in place of the carrier to the square tubes, and then bolted the carrier to the plate 6" further up.

It's been like it for nearly a year now, and seems to work really well.

He's gorgeous - beautiful wuffley nose. One day, I might get some more.

They used to make me laugh all the time, when I wasn't swearing at them!

Well done for helping the man out.

Sorry but tinsel on the truck is not quite my taste:lol:lol

Nice looking animals but I can't help thinking about Richard Whitely with one attached to his finger. Wouldn't stick my little fingers anywhere near one:eek:, their teeth are way out of proportion to the size of them.
