Do you need a second battery to power it ?

What sort/weight of winch ?

No 2nd battery needed BUT make sure you always have the engine running when winching. Also your alt is in good nick and all your belts are adjusted properly.
Mine's been fine for the last 4 years.
You should have the biggest capacity battery you can afford 100 A/H minimum I reckon.
Winch size is a bit of a pay off. 12.000lb winch will get you out of trouble but will take longer than an 8000lb one. Personally I'd go for size over speed :naughty When your truck is properly stuck upto the windows in a bog POWER is what you need :augie

yes, i'd rather have the power than the speed when stuck.

Forgot to say you can easily upgrade your alternator too, for say a 90 a/h one. You can get much bigger but then you get cable size issues.

go with makeitfit on that, but do not forget that a winch is rated with cable on the drum every layer extra reduces the power but ups the speed a little, a 13000 ib winch will prob only have 7000 lb with 4 layers of rope, so a couple of blocks can be very usefull, Rick

I've got the predecessor to this one but still with steel cable http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251137361738?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Buy this one as it's better value with the dynema rope already on it.
Mine's been used to great effect and for the money brill :thumbs
Dont even bother going s/h unless you know it's never been underwater as the motors and gearboxes aren't water proof at this level. That said a good coating of grease helps

What about the winch box/plate ?

I'll make one out of ply and get my mate to make it for me out of 8mm steel plate, but can you fit this to the bumper bracket ? or do you need to do away with the bumper bracket ?

I was hoping to cut the bumper out and fit the winch plate in onto or inbetween the bumperbracket where it fixes into the chassis rails. also planing on 2 tubes protuding horizontaly like the LR challenge bumpers?makeitfits new patrol design

What are your thoughts on the wich plate location and retaining stock bumper ?

you need to do away with the bumper bracket. Attach winch tray to where the bumper mounts to on the chassis. Then make a way of attaching the bumper to the winch tray.

The other winch you linked to is cheaper as it's got steel wire, go for synthetic especially if you can't see the drum that well as it spools alot easier.

You can get a winch behind it and make it near standard.

So one with a steel cable is fine for a starter like me ?

And i guess it cold be changed for a synthetic at a later date ?

PIC

That does look smart :thumb2

is this yours/you ?

Got any pics of the install ?

It's the same winch but with steel cable is all so bound to be cheaper. It's fine and dandy mate, just remember to wear gloves when handling just in case.
As above or see my link on winch bumpers :thumbs

.

Here's a thread that I done when I fitted my winch stinka

I bolted the winch mount directly to the chassis were the metal bumper bar goes and managed to fit the bumper iron in there too so if I ever need to remove it I can.

I've got 13,000 lbs winch with only one alternator and 95ah battery new belts every 6 months seems to work a treat I must admit I probably don't use it as much as some of the other guys on here maybe 10-15 times a year I would say and it pulls my truck with the handbrake on no probs (only to test it of course lol)

Only a few pics but they are close up

Cheers mate. I see what u mean, you just cut the middle section of the bumper bracket away and went in between

My only concern is it looks quite low and would be covered in mud all the time ?

It needs to be at that ht ideally so that the line of pull is as close as possible to the fixing bolts level. This reduces the tendancy for the tray to twist under load. Even I wash the winch off after a mud session :D

.

As makeitfit said best to keep the winch inline with the bolt locations.

It's not that low really though its where every winch is fitted to a maverick / terrano
It's only mud just wash it off after :thumbs
