I think quality really does matter for a winch, chances are you'll have no choice but to pay lots of money for a good one.

I have one of those, wont pull you out of a ditch but handy for heaving stuff around.
I was powerfull enough to move my partner van along the drive when the engine was dead, it would have taken a few of us to push it, I managed alone.

Why so?

I dont really understand winching laws? :nenau

Ideally I would like a portable winch, but I guess I would need front and rear mounting available?

Depends on what you want a winch for.the hand winch on my trailer is only 750kg pull but will easily pull terrano up the ramps that one is more than twice as powerfull as mine

I like to lane alone on many occasion. I want it as an emergency get me out of a small bog. Im never gonna be up to windows in slop or anything like that, just if I do get stuck I can wral it round a tree n give it gas :thumb2

It's not twice as powerful , it's a 2000lb winch  or 900kg in new money :augie
So it'll pull as you say rolling stuff onto a trailer etc but won't get a stuck T2 out the mud .

Any recommendations from the experts?

I want a winch that would cope with pulling me out of mud :thumb2

I've not researched removable hitch mounted before but load wise at least 4500 lbs.
Also does anyone know the safe working load of a tow ball :augie
Not enough I'd guess.

Balls i think are 2.9 tonne
They may be but it depends on the ball fitted. So the only safe answer is to look at your ball and read the number. It could be a 1.5 tonne or a 3.5 tonne or whatever.
Even then the figures assume a new hitch, not an old fatigued one.

Hmm, so whats the easiest method of fitting a winch? Just cut out some bumper n bolt to chassis? This is sounding v in depth :doh

You just need to think through your needs. If you think you've got a winch in the boot that'll get you out of the doo doos, you'll probably get stuck in the doo doos :doh
You could put a Trifor winch in the boot and it's going to work every time, slowly, but it'll work, and can be used at either end of the truck :thumb2

yep I go with that, slow and hard work, and will make you more cautious, before you get stuck, Rick

TBH Alex a power winch will prob not be the best thing for you if your laning on your own as most are front mounted which is no good if you need recovering from the rear unless you can make up winch mounts front & rear so the winch could be used either end this might give you some ideas https://plus.google.com/photos/106166290292654336924/albums/5429246068374023953?banner=pwa The other option is a good hand winch like the Trifor but a hi lift jack can also be used but it'll be very slow going. On top of the winch you'll need shackles, snatch block etc:augie Now you do have a good tow strop & a couple of shackles at the min don't you ? if not get some ASAP because if you get stuck it'll be easier to find just a tow than someone to tow you out who has recovery gear

Ok, thanks for the replys guys:thumb2

So that manual winch that has been posted up i need to research, i take it its a slow and painful manual pump style winch. Which sounds good to me :D if some not dangerous still?

I've heard about cable snapping and cutting limbs ect :nenau

The other alternative would be my preference but cost and someone to help me is the issue... :( buying the winch is not the end of the world but i take it you have to weld to the chassis???

You could buy a universal winch tray and mod it to suit the T2 chassis. You don't weld it to the chassis just bolt it on the same place as the front bumper goes. Cut the plastic a bit and you'll get something like the link above
