hi just seen a defender with massive tyres really wide as well. a few years back I knew a chap who used to do eastnor 4x4 course he always said narrow tyres were better as they would dig. where as wide would float just wondering what advantages either have cheers:thumb2

depends on terrain if you want to float or dig.

But if you want high tyres (to give better diff clearance) you have to start going wider too so they are stable enough.

totally random point: i was at Eastnor in September with a load of Land Rover club folks, it would make a good place for a meet :thumb2

narrow work best in snow.

Surely it depends on the snow and how deep it is...

otherwise why do all the russian and icelandic snow trucks have huge wide tyres to enable them to effectively float over the snow?

Big, wide and tall tyres look great.

They also sap horsepower, use more fuel, make braking harder and generally make more noise and in various conditions make handling worse as well as increase wear and tear. Almost all down to the added weight/rotating mass/unsprung etc....

In some off road situations they are a liability too. You can struggle in ruts made by normal width vehicles and you can get sidewall damage easier.

I still love them, but I just can't justify them for commuting 60 miles a day to and from work and the odd off road jaunt.

i am talking about normal snow on road use.
narrow tired landys, old cars etc seamed to get on ok ,have you not see the old films with the old cars plodding on getting through the deep snow in news reports.
when we get snow now all we seem to see are cars wheels spinning in 1" of snow.maybe some cant drive in it.i do not know ,but years ago it did not stop the daily grind like it does now.
off road use i cant comment as i have only had my first 4x4 t2 for a month and only got this to tug a van with as i got stuck out in fields 3 times last year through the wet.
