Hi guys and gals....I'm new to the club, so firstly just like to say hi. I am an avid off roader and probably a bit of a nut case...so hopefully I fit in ;) I have had many Land R***** and most recently I have ownership of a Shogun (atleast it's jap) :) I am now moving on from this, or hoping too, as some of you are probably pleased to hear, an moving to a, I hope a Y61 patrol!! Now I am used to big diesels, but I've got to be honest, ive got used to the refinement of off roading with vehicles with some luxury....my shogun is a 3.2DID 2003 auto, which if I'm honest is good motor or has been to me...I just fancy a new project challenge, so I'm here to ask...which engine should I go for?? I'm sure this topic has been discussed more times than I've had hot dinners, so apologise in advance. I know, a lot of people will say it comes down to personal choice...but is there some advantages to either diesel..I am strongly swayed towards the 2.8Td as its a straight six rather than a 4 cylinder...but I'm open to suggestions and ideas, if anybody can give guidance or point me in the right direction, I'd be real greatful...can't wait to get one and get to kitting the beasty....also, are the Y61's cv joints on the front? Only I'm a strong believer that stub axles are a lot better? If they are CV joints are they strong enough? Many thanks in advance

Adam

Can't do a long reply at the moment but not sure what you mean about a stub axle instead of a cv as they're two different things and Trols have both!

Rest assured though Trol axles are very strong. 2.8 engine is more basic and can cope with modding better than the 3.0 (have to be very careful if you're doing things to them as they can be prone to overboosting when messed with) BUT 3.0 has more power and is fine as long as it's treated properly.

Any Y61's with a 2.8 will be older and possibly not in as good condition as a 3.0 :nenau

Also 2.8 is timing belt (regular changing) compared with the 3.0 hybrid chain/gear (shouldn't ever need changed).

PS. Trols are awesome, love my Y61 :thumbs

Welcome to the group.

Front axles have CV's at the hub, Plenty strong enough but you can buy upgrades which are not out of this world expensive. People say Y61/Y60 axles are a bit stronger than uprated LR axles from the likes of Ashcroft or KAM, More and more winch challenge trucks are using Y61/Y60 axles now. A Handful of competitors vehicles at King of the valleys running them too, One of the reasons this year they are even more popular.

If you want a project and are a crazy avid offroader I suggest go for a older Y60 4.2 diesel.

More basic machine, Although may lack the comfort you desire? But if you are crazy, you need and will want the basic machine as far as I am concerned.

love you Fez :p
I too love my Y60 and the low down grunt that 6 agitated oil burning cylinders can throw out :sly 4.2 is agricultural for sure but damn it'll burn anything :lol
I'm not sure there's a big difference in comfort between Y60 and 61 but the 61 will have more onboard gizmos .
Y61 2.8 turbo is pretty tweakable :naughty

Welcome aboard and youve defo made a nice choice with a trol. As youve seen plenty on here love them. I doesnt bother me what people drive, not much brand snobbery on here any really.

If I could choose which patrol I would go for a nice 4.2 all day long.

Monster!!! :sly

Welcome btw, show us whatcha looking at, must be some links.

Lwb or swb?

Excellent

Hi, thanks so much everyone for your replies....to the first reply, I guess I was slightly confused,
I just knew on my landy I had axles with half shafts and swivel that if in serious problems could be removed. And I could still carry on going :) as the cv's were integral to the swivel housing, just meant they didn't get smashed up! :() well unless you were a complete animal! so are Y61's indepentant suspension all round? Or???
But as stated they are fairly heavy duty :) only I've got to be honest, when in my shogun off roading, it handled admirably but if anything was to fail...it was those God damn CV joints, no heavy dutys available for her though :/ I've tried attaching a pic, I'm looking at a low mileage,
80,000 manual 2.8TD, I'd love the 4.2, but it's my one and only vehicle, so that's why I kind of need the refinement. Keeps the mrs a little happier ;) if I could get my hands on a Y61 GR with a 4.2 then we'd certainly now be talking!! :clap a couple of other questions, are the auto Hubs on the front able to be changed to manual? Is this better? Is there anything you'd advise to watch out for when buying? Other than usual rust!
Thanks again all...really glad to be here...hopefully I'll be laning and meeting peoples soon :)

The CVs are are in the swivel housing on patrols.

And have front and back solid axles like Defenders/Discos.

You can get the Y61 shape with a 4.2 either from someone putting one in themselves or a AUS import. Both usually go for quite a bit of money on ebay.

Hubs on the Y61/Y60 are manual and auto. But you can remove the auto part from it so only manual.

Aaaha

That's awesome thankyou! I'm real glad to hear that! Looks simple, I'm good with simple :):thumb2

Warming up

Yeah they look nice just like that! I guess that's how they all start! I hope to make it look a lot meaner over time...any case anyone was interested...this is how me shogun ended up

Yeh bud you can buy manual hubs to replace the autos on the Y61 Trols...

BUT instead of buying manual hubs you can just convert the Trol's existing auto hubs into manuals ;)

Trol auto hubs are a bit more than your standard auto hubs as they can be locked manually using the wheel nut wrench so when you're doing serious offroading your hubs won't bang out and back in when you change direction.

What I've done (and a lot of the Aussie's do) is remove the auto bit from the hub (5 min job with a couple of screwdrivers). It turns the hub into a proper manual (unlocked when on "auto", locked when on "lock").

Personally I prefer manual hubs to autos as they're much simpler and more reliable. You can also get 2wd Low if you leave the hubs unlocked :D

Hi, welcome, had a y61, 3.0 zd and loved it til the gizmos failed on the zd. would love to have another y61 but would need to be a 6 pot.

is the one in the shot at a dealer in Peterborough, and is
it on ebay?

For everyone else if it is then its one Plank was toying with getting, reg looks so familiar
but I would say its been for sale almost a year. bit pricey at £4500

Hi, yeah it is indeed in Peterborough, and I thought that, it's low mileage though, an looks clean?? It's a 6pot too!! So I thought it was the better way too go?? I guess that is strong money for it then?? Hmm now I'm not sure, that's a long time to be for sale....Hoping it's just because of the price?

must be one of last 2.8s on W reg, my 3.0 was an x reg, same colour scheme too.
some pix in an album in my profile.

quotes low mileage, for year, guess W is 99/00. suppose if been second / third car
for towing only as some are mileage is viable.

Chris (plank) loved mine but after issues had with agreed better off with 6 pot.

See if open to offers, or what warranty is but long way to take back unless a generic
cover.
