Just a query, has anyone else had the issue of the rear wheels rubbing the wheel arches sides when the wheel is fully articulated??

I've never had it happen before up until I went to Spain, and only then thought it was because I was running steels rather than alloys (I assumed there was less offset) plus I was running more weight in the back. But I've just been out 'wheeling today (with the alloys on) and it was doing it worse! The only thing I changed before I went to Spain was the shocks, and they should be the same only gas (as opposed to hydraulic). The rear springs are heavy duty ones (I think) so I did also wonder whether they had sagged. Could either of these two be the cause??

Im assuming you've got oversize tyres on, cos if you havent something is seriously wrong! ????

Nope, got standard 235/75/R15 Cooper S/T's on.

They have rubbed so much today that they have removed some of the underseal from the arches!! I think I might need to fit some sort of bump stop...

Ive never had bump stops on the car and ive had it nearly 2 years. Like I said, the only thing that I have changed on the suspension is the shocks, so im thinking that maybe the new ones compress more than the originals, but then saying that, the downward articulation doesnt seem to have been affected...

Heres a picture of the car fully laden and running the steels in Spain...

...and heres a picture from yesterday (but articulated the other way)

I assume this is normal articulation for a standard suspension setup (obviously minus the rear ARB and bump stops)??

WIth the anti roll bar off (when did you do that) and no bumpstops you're pretty much bound to get rubbing in the top/side of the arches on full flex. Mine still rub a tad with the bump stops fitted, but then I've got bigger tyres on too. Chuck a load of weight in too and....

Also see thread on bumpstops, Nissan call them spring assisters, my guess is they act as a spring for the first part of travel before compressing up solid (they have voids) suggest fitting some before you do some tyre damage.

The rear ARB came off last auturm. Ive been offroad, and more importantly been articulated loads of times since then and never ever had it rub before. I am just intrigued to know why it has just started to do it now. Like I said, the bumpstops have never been on the car, but may go on the list of things to buy. Any idea on price??

mine never had them on either. and never noticed when i had those exact same wheels with standard tyres on.
you might find your dampers are so past it now there is nothing left and the axel is just bouncing around under there.

you need good dampers and bump stops. carefull undoing whats left on there though 3 of the 4 bolts snapped on me ... so had to weld my new ones on

give them a good soak in wd40 for a week at least

I seem to recall horrendous from the dealers but should be cheap from a breaker.

It was probably just the extra weight that made it show up then.

None of the cars down my two local breakers have them fitted

It was running 'normal' weight yesterday ie half a tank of diesel and nothing in the boot...

The shocks are near enough brand new. Theyre a set of gas KYB's

Sod WD40, ill just get the propane bottle out and a blow torch attachment! Nothing shifts rusty bolts like 1100+ degrees C and a breaker bar!!

Ok...have you got any extra offset on your wheels?? I'm thinking that i might be able to get around this problem by fitting wheel spacers

if you fit spacers you will probably start a whole new set of rubbing issues on the front end.i know i did.
