I have a Volvo with a NIssan 2.7 engine which died in France. I bought a Maverick engine to replace it and took it to France. They used the original flywheel and fitted the original starter motor which is now on the blink.

I bought the Maverick starter motor but that won't fit as the French mechanic had to fir the original flywheel to be able to use the orig. starter motor.

How can I identify the start motor I need?

any numbers on it a motor factor might be able to trace? is it beyond getting recond that way you dont have to worry unless you wanna get one in as spare! interesting conversion you got there what was in it before a vw diesel or petrol some petrols were reno units i believe so could be french connection there!

The terrano and Maverick will use the same starter, the one you have will be related to your gearbox. Only reason to swap the flywheel would be if one engine was a manual and the other an auto, quite possible as there seems a fairly even mix on theses trucks. The bolt pattern on the bell housing where the starter mounts will dictate which starter should be used thought the tooth pitch on the ring gear (on the flywheel) is important too.

Problem solved. Swpapped flywheels to match new motor
