ok so im full of dumb questions, so what makes the turbo work is there somthing mechanical that makes it work,

i have now checked the hoses, fuel line, filters, the air. i have checked the turbo to see if it spins freely with no movement all seems ok

so can i run it without the top air hose from the turbo to the inlet manifold the one with turbo writen on it .(will this help) to see if its working

is there a fuel line to the turbo .

how does a turbo work exactly... in simple turms please

Turbos are just 2 turbines linked by a shaft, the first is driven by exhaust gases passing over it (much like a windmill) this then drives the other turbine which acts like a fan to pump air into the cylinders - very simple really - if the shaft is free to turn and the engine is running the turbo will work.

i get it now... simple

well mine spins freely and smoothly but still no power . its oily as hell( from after the turbo towards the cylinders), but like you say if it spins it has to work. the turbo is as clean as a whistle fins wise

so is there an ecu to control the extra fuel needed or is an L reg too early for them.

i think the little hoses to the black thing attached to the air filter box are more than likely wrong as they dont match the ones in the egr download would this have drastic cause to problem im experiencing it is juicy and slow top end wise its ok pulling off

its like up yo 2000 rpm its as expected, after 2,500 rpm nothing else happens performance wise

Hi extreme-4x4 are you comparing a early TD to a later TDI  if you are there is a difference in power between the 2  If it's oily I would clean it out of the pipe work anyway as it'll help the air flow a bit smoother into the engine

well i do have a td and a tdi so i suppose i would naturally compare even if i was trying not to ,

im not over sure on the mpg but my tdi is easilly twice as good on fuel as the td and the td is really gutless it really is like driving a 1.9 straight deisel not a 2.7td

its true the tdi is gorgeous to dive but i really would have expected more from a td ... like i said before in a previous post my old vw lt35 was faster (and that was the ugly shape)

i have cleaned it all out ,checked it all over the only thing im not sure of is the little pipes that go from the black bit fixed to the air filter box three hoses going to the egr valve and other bits they look mixed up but cant confirm i could really use a diagram or something,

are there any other sensors or someting like a throttle sensor maybe.

geting sick of it now

You can't really diagnose fuelling / turbo issues without a (temporary) boost gauge, and a vacuum pump, and if you dont own either of these, i would suggest you ask around for a good diesel mechanic and let him have a look.

If you can get a schematic from the Terrano workshop manual CD you can check the EGR and throttle plate (if fitted) routing but you really need the v/pump to check the lines arent leaking or the diaphragms split.

I've known wastegate housings to crack on the T25 and the valve head to drop off down the exhaust system, as well as the linkage to drop off externally, all of which will result in virtually no boost at all.

Did this truck used to perform well, or is it new to you?

Tim..
