Looking for a replacement 4 x 4 locally within 20 miles of Derby.

Up to now have found a Tuscan 2.0 Diesel auto and Shogun 7 seater 5 door auto in my price range maximum £5k and not over 100,000 miles.

Anyone here had a Shogun Auto ?

yes , I had a shogun 2.8 lwb auto .... had 3 head gaskets in 2 months ..... terrible mpg ...would I have another ? ....... NO !!

The 3.2 from what I know isn't a bad engine & gives good MPG only down side I know of is the auto box costs big money to fix when it go's wrong. The later ones don't have a ladder chassis any more as they are monocoque shells. I did look at a couple a few years ago & there is tonnes of room inside them more than a disco 2:augie

I also had 2.8 auto loved it 2003 to many elect problems mpg not good but loved the shogun i'd have one again tomorrow :thumbs

My r3mR auto it was usually in the 21-23 mpg range except in the winter when it would drop to 18mpg on short journey work. On a run it was 25-28 mpg.

Okay so how bad was the mpg on your Shogun ?

Ouch that's low !!

I got around 15mpg ........ when it was running

That's pretty low think I might look for an alternative. Just realised the Tuscan is smaller than the Santa FE so that is out. Just found a Jeep Grand Cherokee locally at a small dealership in our price zone but its the 2.7 engine not the 3.0 litre 6 cylinder. Might take a look at the weekend when we know for certain how much the insurance company are giving us for the old Santa Fe.

The 3.2 engine should get better economy than the 2.8 engine Briggie had in his Shogun.

Have to say my 2.8 Shogun LWB never missed a beat, even when she started overheating because the water pump seal had gone and started dumping coolant - new pump fitted and away I went.

Mine was a manual rather than an auto but I used to reckon on getting around 24 mpg.

Only got rid of her as I fancied a Trol (and something a bit newer).

Don't confuse the old 2.5 & 2.8 MPG with the newer 3.2DI engines as the new 3.2 gives much better MPG & on paper they are better than the 3L T2's:augie

That's interesting the Missus likes the Shogun so it's going to be down to her in the end.
I can only advise her what the options are it will be her call!

Figures on website show 21.2 urban, 32.1 & 26.9 mpg bet thats for a manual though!

The mileage wories me as it's 99,000 so within a month it will be in six figures

I can only advise you based on my experience with them .... but shoguns are / were notorious for blowing head gaskets

Goal posts have moved a bit.

Tonight its a three horse race !!

1. A Shogun.
2. Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7
3. Discovery 2.5 TDI on a 51 plate 1 family owned FSH.

find the poor diesel mpg quotes interesting as their petrol shoguns
are always said to be pretty good relatively.

a neighbour has a 3.5 petrol 24v v6, says mid to high teens though
makes such a lovely sound temptation not to use loud pedal is hard.

Ooh yum, that's just the right mileage for a dms replacement and probably a cam chain strip :naughty

A 51 plate disco will be a disco 2 with the TD5 engine, if you like fixing motors every weekend with expensive parts buy it now:lol been there, seen it & done it with a disco 2 never again:doh TD5's often suffer cracked heads, faulty ABS pumps, air bags leak & their compressor fails often, injector harness needs replacing every year as they fill up with all & you will get water pouring off the headliner down the back door into the boot & at the front into your lap:doh & i've just touched on a couple of the common problems
Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 are nice motors just make sure they have had all the recalls done just phone a jeep dealer with the reg & ask

Merc 5 cylinder engines

Cherokee 2.7 merc engines suffer from leaky injectors so I'm told

I work at a MB dealership leaky injectors were a problem with the 4 cylinder engines and to some extent still are.
The 6 cylinder V6 engines were sound.

The 2.7 engine was based on the old 2.5 TD but upgraded with common rail and a few extra cubic centimetres bored out. They are reliable but not very punchy engines fitted to the old shaped ML series. I am not aware of injector issues on the 2.7 engine.
I am not a fan of 5 cylinder engines I had a C250 TD Estate and it was very boring. I like the Jeep the later V6 versions are much better but a tad thirstier but a bit more than I want to pay.

Dont hold back which one would you say is the winner ?

you will not be disappointed with a shogun 2.8 or 3.2 long story why I sold I do like my terrano but I loved the shogun don't buy the import one they they say there's no difference but there is imports have cylinder head problems and i'm not getting into any arguments :thumbs
