My Terrano has started sounding different when I'm on the motorway, the engine noise is louder and sounds like a rear passenger window is open. (It's not BTW, I've checked ;))

I assumed because that's where the exhaust is and more fumes are produced when on the motorway that the fault lies with the exhaust. I haven't noticed fumes in the cab if that helps?

Am I thinking along the right lines, or could this be something worse?
Thanks.

With the engine running on tick over, place a cloth in a plastic carrier bag over the exhaust, and you will hear it wheezing if it is leaking.

Depends which part has one, I suspect either the centre silencer, or the rear. It will sound like a big guff, will sound OK at normal driving, but when accelerating, guffy! Very easy to check tho, just crawl under passengers side and inspect.

Usually the flexi joint on the downpipe it the culprit:thumb2

Also check the exhaust where it bends over the top of the rear axle, often the top side of it.

Look for black soot on the exhast as that is another tell tail.

Ask someone to rev the engine whilst you are look around the car and see if you can tell with that.

My exhaust started making a banging noise when we were in Wales... I discovered that the flange had snapped, and the last section was just floating around

Took it off today, and can't believe I never noticed this before... To be fair it does run along the top, but looks like telling if it is blowing is not so easy by the sound alone.

So, the blowing continued, then suddenly it stopped :) but was replaced by the sound of a loose piece of metal :(
The exhaust connected to back rear of the back box had rusted through, took it to my local garage I was expecting to need half a new exhaust system, but instead they put a sleeve around it and welded it up and all for the princely sum of £15. As they didn't have any change and I was expecting it to be much more they got £20.
