ok, I need to describe this as best I can, so i'll start from the beginning.

Had to drive to leeds today, so went motorway route, first time since fixing the car, all went well. Into Leeds to Whiterose. 40 mins later, back on the road, except this time I decided to go the main road way home. All ok, and it started chucking it down. when I hit the hill going up towards Ainley Top, a long hill about 3/4 of a mile, I started to judder. Luckily i got stuck behind a learner doing 30 (i was doing 50) so lumbered up behind them. no MIL light, and everythign returned to normal. I took my first right off the main road and turned off the engine, waited a few minutes then restarted, off i went all seemed ok. ??. OK, some info to help, since re fitting my intercooler, and K&N, i have had a right whistle upon acceleration, this was put down to the K&N, and I could really hear my turbo and air blow off/dump. When I got the car home, I quickly checked the codes, but they wouldnt read, wouldnt even flash to say no codes. So I did the reset procedure, and went into the engine bay. I tightened the clips for the intercooler pipes, as some were a bit loose, and also adjusted the screw that sits off the brass thing next to the oil dip stick. The screw itself was set in a position, so i literally just screwed it in till i could no more, figuring that was the position it should be in.

Took it for a couple of drives, slow rough terrain and down the streets, and it seems ok, but i cant hear the turbo no more, or that whistle. I THINK the turbo is kicking in, I can sort of hear something...what do you think???

well two things I'd say....firstly, it isn't unknown for the T2 to misfire a bit in REALLY wet conditions.....I've been barrelling down the French autoroute (where they have REAL rainstorms!) in a heavy rainstorm and had such symptoms, which clear as soon as the rain does. And if you had slightly loose pipework it would be easy for some of that water to get sucked in.

And before anyone suggests it, its not the K&N (my 'wet' experience was with the standard airbox at the time).

Secondly, while you can hear the turbo whooshing on my old automatic with a K&N, on my MkIV I can't hear a thing..... so don't worry that you can't, might just have been loose pipes that exacerbated the noise....:thumbs

ok, i hope thats all it is, one other thing I did do that I forgot to mention, was release the fuel filter drain tap, all i got was a gurgling. With these cars, how would you know if the turbo was NOT working, do they go extremely slow/heavy??

im no expert , but didnt you recently powerwash your car ? ... i wonder if pressured water got in some loose pipes or even the k+n ? :nenau

possibly Pete, but it was pretty warm, yesterday, and car was behaving itself 100% untill the rain came. See my route took me through bradly/fixby, thats when the rain came heavy, and i went through a couple of big-ish puddles.

I checked the air filter, dry as a bone, just been out for a drive, and if anything, its driving better. At least it seems ot be, i dunno, heres the thingy i adjusted, it was open about half way from where it is now, but i dont know what it does??

i also tightened up the I/C pipes, could it be, that all this time, I have been loosing air through the pipes, thus causing the whistle sound I atrributed to the filter>? and also exasperating the turbo sound? I went out for a drive just now, up hill, main roads and fast roads. its accelerating quicker it feels, just minus the noise, sounds much MUCH more like Jims did when we went for a drive. I had zero judder, no MIL flashing, no smoke, no nowt. go figure.

well its a good point cos you don't exactly get a kick in the back of the seat do you LOL.....guess its just something you have to work out for yourself TBH....0-60 time might be a good test? (remembering that your speedo undereads by 8-10% when you do the calculations, so test it to 65mph....).

See how it goes this week Clivvy. I have to say though my car don't like White Rose Centre either, she has a habbit of backing the T2 into bollards in that car park:doh

Your more than welcome to bob over again to compare trucks if you want.

Jim

Thanks guys, i know i'm fussing sorry, i think it stems from the Mazda as I am REALLY fussy over that! I reckon i may have nailed i though when I adjusted that screw on the thingy wotsit thats connected to the I/C, and tightened those clips around the I/C hoses, to me, if I was able to tighten them,, then they CANT have been holding the pressure of air in, hence the noises i've had!

Jim, would be awesome to pop over to see you again, its actually REALLY useful being able to compare trucks! Although as I said earlier, mine actually sounds MUCH more like yours. I dont have that whistle any more, and far less "turbo" his or whatever that was!

just a thought. If it was water that caused the juddering/power issue going up hill, WHERE would the water hav egot in, and to what componant? The filter is well covered, could a small amount get in and caused that sort issue? What about the I/C inlet, does water getting in there cause any issues?

just had a read .about your propblem with your truck..... i say its not the
k and n air filter for 1, i had 1 on my old jeep and went though pleanty of deep water in that and had no probs.

as for you turbo noise whisel ect... on my t2 dont here the turbo at all and only a very slight kick when it kicks in!!! so would think you have no problem their.so if its running ok now just drive and enjoy :thumb2

cheers sidsid, i reckon your right (im just being fussy cos i dont know what caused the judder thing on my way home), but it certainly seems improved now since tightening those clips etc...

well if it got into the i/c it would end up in the engine....too much would make it splutter, small amount would just be like water injection - ever notice how your truck runs better on a cold DAMP morning?

But juist as likely to be electrical....plugs are fairly watertight but not infallible, especially on an old truck. The heat would dry it out quickly of course....

your fussy like me!:D i like things right and drives me mad when things arnt!!

best try and put your little fault out of your mind!

thats the best way i find ever since i have owned a t2..but always seem to think now and again can i trust it!!!

but their again as i have found out recently their not much in life you can trust 100% now adays!!!

so drive and enjoy i say:thumbs

funny how some cars you seem to trust and others you dont.

mazda mx6 bet its built better, and not build by the spainish like most t2:(

as my nissan d21 pick up trust 100%:) it may be old but never let me down, the reson i bought a nissan terrano2. but dont think it is build so well as pick up.

if i had to go across a desert i would take the old pick :)not the terrano !!

i believe, if you get water in the intake of a diesel you will proberly blow the engine, as water wont compress in the cylinder and it can act like a ball bearing,

hmmm...mystery, what about if the I/C pipes werent tight, would loss of air to turbo cause juddering under load as in my example today??

Had the same thing on my Terrano going up hill in heavy rain lost power splutered for a while then cleared and that was 3 years ago and has not happened since

I'm wondering if you had a slight air lock or water in the fuel filter causing the juddering ?

For water in the fuel might depend where the pick up is in the tank hence going up a hill if the pick up is at the back then the water could get sucked up.

Could be just coincidental that the loose pipe,as you might not have found if it had not judded.

Looks like you might have solved 2 problems at the same time :thumbs
