What are dimension of crankshaft and IP?

Hello guys,

I asked mechanic I am using to replace crankshaft oil seal few days ago. While doing that, he dropped woodruff key inside the engine. Luckily I had one from spare IP, but he dropped it too.... :doh
So, looks like they both are same size, but I don't know dimensions now. They are easy to order on ebay. Could you please advise part number or size?

They might migrate to the sump and come out with an oil change, I would think that the oil would have to be hot, to flush them out.
So when you sort it...
You should have two spares.:doh

So what are the chances of them coming out in a cold, as is, oil change?:augie

Only thing I would be worried is if they get caught up in the chain or is this not possible on this engine

No chain on the 2.7, only gears :thumb2

Tbh probably fine even on the 3.0 as the only chain on that is from the injector pump to the camshaft.

Could these not be picked up and possibly seize the engine if it got into the crank area.
I always thought, anything dropped into an engine, had to be removed prior starting.
Also, sack your bloody mechanic, to drop one is bad enough, but two, christ on a bike

Must admit that I agree... the crankshaft whips the oil up and there is a good chance it may pick up the metal key and throw it up into the piston area.

I would be draining oil, and using a strong magnet on the sump to try and drag them to the oil drain point way before starting.

drain the oil and get a large magnet and stick it on the sump move it around where the keys have been dropped and work it toward the bung. once the bung picks them up(that is magnetized too) should be good to go

trouble with that is the sump bung has a raised collar, something I have criticised about as you cannot drain the last dregs that contain the debris, but I would not worry about them once they are in the deep part of the sump, they will stay there for ever, unless you plan on turning it upside down, incidentally the magnet idea on the outside of the sump will not work, it has no influence on the loose item at all, to be honest I would be taking the timing case of to retrieve them that way with a magnetic pic up tool, as they are in a vulnerable shallow part of the sump and just could get picked up for instance if driving over rough terrain, a very slim chance but I would not want to risk an engine, Rick

Removing sump on Terrano is pain in the neck - done that last year, so I won't be doing that unless it's really needed. The only thing I could do is to take a HDD magnet, move it around sump bottom to catch keys, and then leave magnet attached to the sump. Keys won't move anywhere then.

I forgot to say that I have 2 Terrano engines - had to buy another one due to smoking/timing issues about 6 month ago.
These 2 keys were taken from spare engine and as I am planning to restore the engine now, I need these key s back. Can you suggest me what size these keys are?

Removing sump on Terrano is pain in the neck - done that last year, so I won't be doing that unless it's really needed. The only thing I could do is to take a HDD magnet, move it around sump bottom to catch keys, and then leave magnet attached to the sump. Keys won't move anywhere then.

Get down toa joke shop and buy a pair of those "snake rattle" magnets, really strong and cheap, I brought a set before from poundland

you have the info already just measure the recess in the crank, width, depth, length and add about 3mm up stand, Rick

but there is no way you will get anything up to the timing end from the sump bung, nice in theory but practice just not on, Rick
