well it just got worse after that we discoverd the inner sill was shot aswell and the mounting at the wheel arch, my m8 hasn't got a gas welder but also openly said that the job was to much for him to do anyway :doh so spoke to someone else i know but he cant do it till next weekend, however he is an mot tester so has said we will run it through an mot first then fix whatever is wrong. just hope its not going to cost to much

bet its 100 quid at a garage...i had a bracket tacked on the midsection of my saab while they had it on a ramp. the cheeky cants charged me £16 for a 10mm weld...

well i've looked on the bay for new sills but cant find any i'm sure i read somewhere i can use a sill from another car just can't remember what car it was

You do not want to do it with a gas welder, I assume you meant oxy/acetylene, for too much distortion and fire risk, easy to over plate that with mig, Swifty has done lots of them, Rick

the mount under the wheel arch has started to rot aswell also the inner sill has chuffed it

THE INNER BIT

Steel plate no problems, that's exactly what the sills do. On the brightside once they're done it's sorted and wont need it again for many years.

well you are not going to make any sort of job on the inner sill full stop, lets face it the coverplate welding we all do to outer sills and rear seat belt mounting points is only cosmetic, rarely can you you get a perfect weld to good metal, a lot of the time you are welding to weakened rusted stuff, but it gets it through the MOT, most of the time the finished job is not a lot stronger than before, and the MOT man cannot see the inner sills, as long as he can tap suspect areas with his hammer and it sounds good he is happy, when we are looking in the scrappie for a banger we will always go for a rust free one if we can cos it will last a lot longer, if we get one with a bit of rust in it even though we plate it over, and it is not cosmetic plating we use heavier steel and cover as big an area as we can, we know that the first bang in that area and it will fold, and do not forget the T2 has a chassis, in a bang the door sills are not going to do very much, Rick

erm, does that mean the whole sill will need replacing then?

not for the MOT as long as what he sees is OK it will pass, when I scrapped the 4th T2 body recently as it had perfect sills I got the angle grinder out and cut them off, I had intended to include the middle and inner as well, but far too complicated, you would never be able to refit that lot to an existing motor, you would have to strip the interior, seats, carpet, belts, wiring loom, etc and make some very difficult cuts to the motor and you still would not be able to weld the middle of the three as there is no way to get at it, yes there a three sections and it all ties in with the B post and front seat belt points there is some heavy metal at that point and the A post, and yes I have two perfect sills I was considering fitting them to my work motor that has had some plating done but I suppose I could be open to offers, I would need to consult Swifty as he is the welding man, to be honest I can weld as good if not better but I cannot see so well, I cannot hold the gun steady, and I cannot get down there for long before I lock up, Rick

Rick I had thought about cutting out the outer sill to weld in a dirty great box section as a tree slider.
As you've seen the inside is this possible on a road going truck? ie seat belts and doors still working :thumbs

not sure the inside is quite complicated, but I guess if you cut enough out you could weld in a box, but not sure how you can get to the internal bits to weld those, ie seat belt points, unfortunately the body is now at the scrappers so I cannot check, Rick
