Just for information, I had my car, Xtrail 2.2 dci sport 2004 on the weighbridge on Wednesday.

With half tank of fuel no driver the weight was 1630 kg, If this is of interest

It can be usefull to do this, I remember haivng a dispute with the MOT tester on my old isuzu trooper once, the brakes werent quite up to scratch according to his vehicle weights chart.

it had new rear callipes and pads. But had oversized wheels and tyres and a suspension lift.

The bigger wheels do change the brake force readings, anyway, his chart listed only 'isuzu trooper' not petrol or diesel, not LWB or SWB etc.

So i took it to the weight bridge, and guess what? using the actual vehicel weight as tested in passed easily!

SO YOUR INFO MAY BE OF USE TO SOME ONE

Just as general comment on the subject of weight it can be surprising how little a big 4x4 can carry without exceeding its GVM.

All additions such as bull bars, winches, roof racks etc contribute to the GVM and by definition therefore reduce the vehicles legal load carrying capabilities.

Vehicle weight tends not be something that is given any great consideration and seems to be par for the course on big trips however it could have insurance implications if you were to prang it.

Fill - where abouts in West Yorks are you? I'm just over the border in N Yorks (but only just), South Milford, east of Leeds on the way out to Selby.

Fill, you have a point, particularly with commercial vehicles ans then overloading is a 'crime!' It pays to put all your regular gear in and sit in it on the weigh bridge that way you will have an idea of how much weight you can carry, which is the gross vehicle weight minus the actual weight as given by the weigh bridge.

I get my van done every few weeks at a customers as I go in 3300-3400kg so not a lot to spare. Ought to get the truck done sometime but IIRC the chassis plate differences between Gross and Kerb weight are over 1.5 tonnes. Will have to have a look some time and check.

HB the laws on overloading commercials and private cars are very different so its not quite such an issue, I know this particularly applies to train weight (towing capacity basicaly) I heard of a case whith a dealership towing a car trailer with a nissan serena, which put it over its train weigh according to the chaisis plate and they were taken to court. Their deffence was, the train weight applied to the van the serena was based on and the serena was a car not a van, they won the case!

it is just one example but i wouldn't get over concerned about wieght capacity where being stopped by the police is concerned, however, as Fill points out insurance may be a different matter!

Hi all
For info. - I weighed my '96 T2 2.7 diesel LWB today, with half a tank, without occupants and no 'extra gear' it showed 1940 kg (X 2.2 = 4628 lb).
Regards CL
