Had a bit of an absence from the site for a while being as the T2 was behaving itself...however...I got lulled into a false sense of security as I've
just replaced my water pump after it developed an annoying drip....no I wasn't giving David Cameron A lift....LOL

Anyway, found a new pump from a local motor factors last weekend..and made the old one last till today rather than try and swap it out in the dark after work.

Got it all back together, thinking i should have replaced the belts at the same time. Got it filled up and running when, yep you guessed it...alternator belt decided that was enough and shredded...Doh.
anyway got the dad in law to run me out to the motor factors for new belts and replaced them....all good now.

as for the belts...it looked like they'd be a bit of a pig to change with the rad n fan blades on, but tbh it wasn't too bad as there's a cut out on the shroud to feed em in over the blades.

Have also renewed my membership as it's definitely worth the money because this site has, yet again given me the confidence to tackle yet another job that i would have normally passed over to a garage.....so many thanks again for this top notch site.

well done i think i will change my belts soon....when its a bit warmer, well maybee not that soon, any tips, dont like paying garages either if i can do myself, best £10 spent being a member too.

I you're just swapping the belts you should be able to do it with everything in place if it's the same or similar under the bonnet as the T2.

on mine theres a small cut out (3" long) on the RHS of the fan cowling as you look at the engine from the front.

This will allow you to feed / remove the belts over the fan blades.

apart from that, just loosen off the adjusters on the P/S pump and alternator (both easy access) and make sure you get the tension right afterwards....shouldn't be any swearing / skinned knuckles on that job.

to get the right tension mark where they were tightened upto with a marker pen then tighten back to same position

Just replaced the water pump and belts on my maverick.Really was quite suprized how easy it was to do.

Cheers Gav

Ah that reminds me!!!! I'm going to cut my cowling off while the angle grinder is to hand :D Most pointless thing ever on that car and caused me the most headache when I did my Water Pump

dont need to cut it off it has 2 screws at top, take them off and then remove the bottom of the circular bit it just pulls out

job well done but marking the adjusters might not be right as a new belt will always be shorter and you do not want to over tighten them, just a thought.

but when they were put on they were new and tightened as such

Over time, they slacken off as they stretch with use, and usually at the first couple of services they will get tightened up.

Not only that, but different makes of belt can vary in length by a couple of mm, which is why they have so much spare adjustment. Normally, they have a deflection measurement of say, 1inch on the longest side, using the tip of your thumb.

Most belts are also "V" shaped and as the edges wear, they slip deeper into the "V" of the pulley, which again makes them appear longer.

I tend to go for slightly looser, as too tight, and not only does it wear the edges of the "V" quicker, but it wears the bearings on the alternator, water, Aircon and power steering pumps, and just tighten it up a little more if it slips when wet. Mine just gave a bit of a squeak when I was paddling at Slindon, but was fine up till then and has been fine since, but if I was paddling on a more regular basis, I would do them up a touch more.
