Help! New owner.....

The dashboard gauge on my '99 2.7TDI never moves off the stop, heater seems to blow warm air regardless of the slider setting. Does this sound like the thermostat has gone & needs replacing?

Whilst poking about, I'm sure (or have at least convinced myself) that there is a slight leak of coolant from the water pump, it can only be very minor as coolant doesn't seem to be diminshing appreciably & pump doesn't seem noisy...

I've driven 400 miles in it in the last week & aside from the above it's behaved impeccably!

Advice, suggestions, prognosis???

Also, I noticed yesterday that the clutch pedal feels a bit 'creaky'. it didn't before. I'm hoping it's as simple as a blob of grease or a squirt of wd40 where it hinges.......

Thanks all

Ian

get your head up under the dash, make sure the levers are doing what they are ment to be.. search, just did it here while ago.. where the arm has come off swivel.

water leak from the bottom of teh pump, need new one.. ebay are the place to go a few of us have had no trouble, unless you want to got to nissan that is.. search, youll find a few.. if cant call, ill let you know where i got mind from.

wd40 on clutch pedal, should ok, if still creaks, again get down and under dash to look, might have BROKEN and need repair. do a search on here for that, been covers a little while ago,.

My water pump used to leak a little, but when I changed the thermostat it stopped :augie :D

Thanks guys!

Would the thermostat account for the fact that the temp gauge never moves?

I like the idea of a cheap easy fix :augie

Especially as my new toy has already cost me considerably more than I intended... the front diff was empty of oil! Amazingly 4wd still worked... however it didn't look healthy & has now been replaced.......

If the thermostat wasn't working, the temp gauge would still rise I amsure, it's a seperate sensor that operates the dash dial I think, point being it could be a seperate sensor that's at fault, or the needle itself perhaps?? I think changing the thermostat is easy, may be worth having it checked, see if it gets the gauge moving. Did you check the codes? Might be worth doing to endure all sensors are ok...

If the thermostat jams OPEN you have a constant stream of water through the radiator so the engine never gets warm..

See what happens when the experts turn up! That sounds about right to me!!

Might take some investigation...... & expense.......

So.... do you think that might account for the stuck temp gauge? (still hoping for the cheap fix.....). It's been driving fine, 50-100 motorway miles plus local stuff, in one go, no probs. Heater always seems to blow warm air.

All invaluable info to me! I'm not the best with the spanners & this was supposed to be a cheapish solution to Peak District winters, a bit of towing & a fun toy....

Thermo is a piece of P to do and their only about 6 quid at the motor factors :thumbs
As Darwin says it could also stop the gauge going up much as these trucks tend to run pretty cool anyway:cool:

yeah thats very true, end of the day that viscous fan is always running (it is vicous isnt it??) so you have some cooling there too...
