having toyed with some cheapo fans and not convinced have been
to milners and bought a new pump.

exchanging doesnt look too hard, well fan blade unit came off nice
n easy...

not dealt with a tensioner before any advise how it works or releases
want to get it down this week.

anything should do, got factory cd, says dont get belt wet but isnt
a step by step guide.

any help be appreciated.

i have aboslutely no idea :nenau

i hope that helped :thumbs

ok its done and doesnt anti freeze taste nice, yep sprayed me
dropping rad plug out.

deano did the spanner bits.

set it up with fan back on and cowling.

last night ragged it over wood head, got little over half, just
nice and warm.

tonight had caravan on, oops needle pegged out at max on
some decent hills.

so been flushed, got new pump/viscous on, and doesnt show
heat til towing.

any suggestions, havent done stat, but do have one ready.
that said warms up nice n quick and plenty of heat from
heater so could stat still be faulty?

Bit odd that :nenau

Try without the Thermostate :nenau

Air lock or blockage :nenau

thanks adz,

dont really get stat is seems to be working
and some say either works or doesnt but

anyone familiar with sniff test, where exhaust
can be detected on coolant, though fingers
crossed isnt as deano says would be cylinder
head/gasket?

truck runs great otherwise, even wondering
if temp gauge is lying, sure its warm but if
was that warm surely new viscous would
lock in, also dont think is as loud as 2.7td's

Bit like Briggies has yours got viscous fan? if so when it is piping hot does it roar like it does when you first start when cold for a few seconds, if not then replace viscous coupling, if you have electric fans do they work? Rick
oh and by the way never run a modern engine with no stat, the fast water flow creates cavitation on casting obstructions and local boiling, stat in place even if jammed open over cools but does not promote local boiling and possible head warping.

does this vicious ( deliberate miss print lol ) come with a new water pump ? or is it a seperate item ?

just changed pump as comes with integrated viscous. doesnt really
roar like my terrano did. cant see new one being dud, though thought
old one was hence changing it.

its certainly getting hot, liquid was going from expansion tank into
overflow non pressuried tank, then drawn back when cooling.

i have used an electronic thermometer probe into join of top hose
and when got needle towards max was showing 86 degree C.

but viscous was free as anything, no sign of it biting to make fan
really work.

Viscous fans work by opening a valve inside that directs the viscous fluid (usually a silicon grease) into spaces between the vanes on the fan part and the hub part, so increasing the amount of drive to the blades, this valve is controlled usually by a bi-metalic coil or spring, the hotter it gets the more the valve opens, the more fluid passes the faster the fan goes, as it cools valve shuts fan goes into free wheel, so testing them stationary is not an option, unless they have siezed, from cold the fan will run at full speed for a few seconds but is not a good indicator that it is working OK, the coil could have failed, the only way is to get it hot while running, they are usually very reliable but personally I do not like them, electric is far better, Rick

a simple test if you get your thermostat out try standing it in a jug of hot water (near boiling and then sticking it under the cold tap just to see if it is opening and closing. with your electroning temperature gismo you could even work out the opening and closing temperature.

been suggested that could be head gasket in that
could get exhaust gasses in coolant, so engine is
hot but coolant not too hot still.

further should get sniff test to determine above.

deano thinks stat ok but what are chances its
opening but not enough and causing restriction to
flow.

looking at diagram of system stat is after rad, and
heater can be fed regardless of stat being open or
so i read it.

heater is really hot, nice, like toast to point almost
painful to keep fingers in vents!

have got a stat but not fitted, any feeling that
should try it to eliminate still...

well if you have a stat and its not too big a job might as well try it.

put it in a pan of water on the stove first with your electronic temperature gismo monitoring the water and see what temperature it opens at.

this way you can be certain it is working and cross it off your 'issues' list. :thumb2

If your head gasket was failing (not failed) you would be getting gas (air) bubbles into water this will show as air on open rad cap, or the pushing of water into the header tank all the time, not just when it gets hot, if yoyr thermostat has failed it again will overheat whithin the first 20 mins of driving, if however the thermostat is just starting to fail then the symptoms will be about as you have, so if you have a stat change it now, that my advise for what its worth anyhow, Rick
