water pump an cooling blades.

Hiya all, Im tryin to replace my water pump but I also need to replace the cooling blades too cos they`re cracking. :? :? I was wondering if anyone had kept an old pump cos I need to know the measurement between the bolts that hold the blades to the viscous housing, its either 143mm or 135mm so ive been told. :? :? ive tried to measure this but cant without stripping everything down, so I need to know before I start the job. Any help with this would be much appreciated. thanks all. -cheers-

Hi, this is from a 1998 TDI

143mm centers diagonally

100mm centers when you measure around the square.

I think yours will be the same measurement as mine gego :roll: When
i went to get my pump I was told there were 2 pumps one upto 96 & one from 96 onwards. I know there will prob be a cross over period around these dates but I would guess yours will be the 135 one Bigdave but i'm only gessing

if you get your new pump first they come with the viscous coupling attatched and it may help to offer this up to a new fan for size, if I have missed the point please ignore me, the wife allways does

Adding to what Plank says, go to a motor factor who has the pump for your year in stock and measure it. Easier than stripping the couling etc off :wink: better still see if they've got both in stock I'm getting confused now

I take it you've not taken yours off yet and don't know the correct size for your engine :?: as the motor factor is telling you there are 2 sizes and he doesn't know the correct size. I'd ask more the one motor factor and would also ask on ebay as there are usually some on there :!:

Ok the easiest way to measure the water pump without stripping everything down is to get a small builders steel tape measure and place one end on the housing where the pump is attached and measure to the far edge of the outer pulley this will give you a measurement, then you use that measurement on your new water pump to get the right one.

One pump stick out further than the other which then off lines your belts to the main drive pulley, hence they will pop off while driving, and for those that have not lost a belt it takes out the rest as it flies around and in my wifes case it was in the middle of an intersection no power steering, water pump,alternator,etc..

good idea, but they will want the cash for both :wink: and if they've to order one they will have a handling charge for returning one :!: well thats what happens in my world :wink:

getting back to original question is this a pump ordering problem or a fan blade ordering problem or both :lol:

I do this at my local m/factor and its never a prob ive been buying stuff from them for nearly 20 yrs plus me mate runs it :wink: i just and pay for what ive used

Hiya gego, dont want to sound thick (too late for that) but the problem is with ordering both. Ive been told there are two sizes of pump an two sizes of fan blades, an I dont really want to strip it all down untill ive got the correct replacements, :? :?

we always fo the same if there is more than one part that might fit, we get both and take the other back, it is common practice, we did it today with a freelander clutch.

and have also dont it before with terrano water pumps, try asking them, we use threee different factors and 2 of them keep both water pumps in stock!

Its the easiest way you only need to approach them with the veiw that your gona use um all the time you will end up with discount aswell its a very cut throat buisness they will nearly do owt for your trade :wink:

hiya all, bigdave here. just want to thank you all for your help with me water pump. Ive fixed it now, pump cost me £95 so not too bad, :lol: :lol: an my mate fitted it for me. so alls well again now. -groovy- sorry its took so long to thank you guys, but ive had some problems gettin on the site. but thats all sorted as well now, I hope lol.
