Well just took out my tank from my diesel Mav. the front seam was leaking, so I took the grinder to the bubbly bits and now I have no mounting points left, the rot has opened up the welded seam, and now it is .... scrap....:doh

So this is the first bit of rust I have found on my Mav in 18 years, and it is now OFF THE ROAD :doh:doh:doh

Anybody got one?

It has to be from a LWB and I was told even a petrol one might be the same.
Tdi later models would be ok as far as I am aware.

I see one on ebay.. Reconditioned... yes looks as bad as mine was.... lol

please help...

best regards,
Rustic

There's one at Phoenix Street Scrap Yard, Tipton at the moment, LWB your shape on a 96' plate, I could deliver it for you for a cup of tea if you wanted :D :thumbs

Just rang Chris at the Scrap Yard and he said if I can get it off, £25

But its boxed in real tight from all 4 side by a fence, 2 Discoveries and a Crane :/, what access do I need?

Thanks for the offer, as it is probably as old as mine, it might have the same rust problem on the front seam.

There are 3 bolts along the front, and on mine the seam had spread to such an extent that it broke the weld.

A week or so, I slackened off the bolts prior to removing, and now the fuel is hissing out....
so even disturbing a good one could highlight a leak.

I have emailed a few breakers, and a few offers are coming in, but I really need to see it prior to purchase, or see a good pic or two.

Just for information, to remove the tank, I lifted the rear carpet, removed the access plate, released the connector, two pipes, then I went in through the rear off side wheel arch and removed the filling hoses, 1 filler, 1 vent, and a small vent pipe, this one goes via a valve and goes up past the filler and turns downwards, so water cant get in, even if wading.. unless you exceed a depth greater than the filler:augie

BUT I was removing mine to reuse, BUT the hoses could be cut from under neath, the 6 bolts took some removing, I have an air wrench which made it easier, but with a standard 1/2" socket set, they are tough.

I will advise after I have had a few offers.

Best regards,

Richard

Well one ball joint and two screen washer pumps so far, oh and a rear wheel bearing isn't exactly "no problems" in 18 years ... is it?
:lol:lol:lol

Not bad though... :clap:clap:clap

At last, he's found some... :D

Well, there was also the mud flaps as well, and it is in need of some waxoyl, there are a few bits of surface rust on the chassis, a quick wire brush and top off with waxoyl usually all that is required.

This winter has been hard on the mav this year.:doh

After the MOT I'll go over the underside again.

Best regards,

Rustic
