Hi all,

When turning the steering wheel whilst manoeuvring at very low speed, I get a vibration and whirring noise only whilst the steering wheel is being turned. I have also noticed a similar whirring noise at times, which seems to go up and down with the engine revs. ( similar to an alternator noise on the radio ).

A few months ago I replaced all the belts as I was getting the classic belt slip after starting the engine. After replacing the belts I continued to have this noise so I tightened them a little just in case. The belt slip was gone but this vibration and whirring noise has got a bit worse.

Could it be the power steering pump is on the way out? :nenau

Fluid!!!!! Check the levels with engine on and off, it cured mine, I've figured out I'm loosing a bit of fluid at the moment due to the cars power steering fluid cooler pipe that attaches to that chassis under the front of the car and is just a loop of pipe that is meant to cool the fluid down but not really needed in this climate.

They tend to wear into a hole on the very clips that hold them to the chassis :doh ,worth checking those too

if your fluid level is OK then it could well be the pump is on the way out, but do not worry I have several, Rick

O.K many thanks for the tips, I'll check the levels tomorrow and report back.

O.K Fluid level is fine so as Rik says it looks like the pump is packing up :(

Fitting it doesn't look too hard, is there a bleeding procedure or anything to look out for with these?

Cheers

Rich

no, fit pump, fill with fluid, run engine, turn from lock to lock a few times, check fluid, top up if needed, bye the way have you checked the belt? Rick

I put a new belt on as the old one was slipping but the new one slipped as well so I tightened it some more. I am a bit wary it is too tight now but doesn't slip but I get a vibration through to the steering wheel on abrupt turns at low speed.
