Lo and behold I've stepped back in time, after years of hysraulic tappets I've now realised i can have a pop at the tappet rattle on my car without replacing everything :clap do they drift out much ?

One question though. I'm well happy actually doing the work (though I'll have to rack my memory) and I'm fine getting 1 tdc from the timing marks.

But when I go to get 4 tdc are there any marks or any indicators to look for? I've previously always adjusted by the rule of 9.

Cheers

Cheers, I've read that and the manual says the same. When I go through the manual it mentions (as you would expect it to) about aligning the timing marks for 1 tdc but doesnt give anything other than 4 5 7 8 will be loose when 4 is tdc.

I may be getting myself unduly worried and it'll all turn out right on the night but its thats long (probably 20 years!!!) since I've actually routinely adjusted tappets plus having screwed up big time on my old escort even more years ago :thumbs

TDC on firing stroke for number 4 cylinder, is one complete turn from TDC on number one.

If you are familiar with the rule of 9 you can still use that method.

Yup, ta. Confirmed that the long way - by doing it:thumbs car now running sweetly. Took me longer to get the oil filter off that some f*****g gorilla had fitted last service :doh

Its just such a long time since I've set tappets I had me doubting me :lol
