A friend of mine in school had an old ford anglia or something (pre Harry Potter style one) and the wipers on that ran off the spare tyre

had air wipers on a bus. bloody awful west midlands fleetlines, their cast off scrap
adopted by post de regulaion operators. little air motor sounding off few inches in front of your face all shift. trying to regulate to point easier to look through rain on screen than use em.

My father used to drive the steam trains, and when he went over to diesel, some of these had air powered wipers.

I don't know what the advantage was, I can only assume reliability over electric ones, I assume you can stall them without anything burning out.
