Hi All,

I noticed my engine was sounding funny on the way home this evening, I popped the bonnet and noticed that the bolt that holds the K&N and MAF cable in place has severed and the air filter is just resting on the wheel arch.

1. Will this have caused any long lasting damage?

2. Should I drive it to work as normal in the morning if I cant get it fixed tonight?

3. Does anyone have ANY idea if there is another nut & bolt I can steel from somewhere else on the car that isnt really needed that I can use on this lol...I have NO spares!!!

Failing that is anyone in the area (Kirkby In Ashfield) that could assist if I chuck you a tenner or something?

The one to the left of your picture there that hold the L shaped thing to the engine bay and the side of the air filter. Its the bit on the bottom thats severed

Just get another nut & bolt from Halfords & ya maf & filter should be fine

Take a pic of any possible damage you think its caused then we can advise you better :thumbs

Cable tie/tie wrap whatever you call them, would sort that for tonight to hold it steady :thumb2 them and araldite or metal putty can solve many a woe . always have them handy.

New bolt or nut and bolt couple of quid from halfords, b&q or screwfix tomorrow :thumb2

Only thing i would query is what has it gone? one of those things or is it overstressed or badly fitted.we all do it :nenau

use a tie wrap.or ya boot lace till you get another bolt.

when you fitted the k/n what did you do with the old bolts from the filter housing as these will fit think they are 8mm?
i have just fitted a k/n and thought it could do with another braket on the other side
cheers Andy

lol tie wraps it is then ;)

Just spoken with my Dad he reckons I probably over tightened the nut :( FAIL!! lol

I will go tie wrap it now and let you know the outcome, I will check for dints n stuff int he filter aswell and see what you guys think

I was going to say, thats bolts under bugger all stress really, its just stabilises the filter body which is held in place by the jubilee clip.

Never overtighten stuff like that.....its hard to explain but when you get as old as some of us codgers, you just know when enough is enough. I bet you're the sort that stands on your wheelbrace as well aren't you LOL

lol - well the problem is worse than I thought. I cannot remove the severed bolt from the hole, I have tried hammering a screwdriver down onto it, and even untightning the nut on the bottom, nether works, Its gonna be a drive to work in the morning and call the AA out job I think :( its gonna need something decent to get that bolt out....

A bit of good news, on closer inspection the L brace thing is still keeping the filter from banging on the wheel arch, im only talking 10 mil or so but its enough. My only concern is it banging on the thing behind it now towards the passenger side window part of the engine (buggered if I know what it is lol).

Thanks for your help as always chaps but I think I am gonna have to risk it in the morning and call the AA....

Or, I'm not sure if the bolt goes right through the captive nut and allows you to get a pair of mole grips on it from underneath and wind it on all the way through, or back?

If not, just spend £8.99 and add another useful tool to your arsenal.:thumb2
