Finally got some time to look after the Patrol again. It needs it after having 'neglected' it for well over a year. :(

It needs all the engine belts replaced and I noticed that, most likely, the front axle seal is leaking on the off side.

However as in the title of this topic I found the outside edge of the front near side tyre completely worn away. Bought two new tyres in August last year (+/- 7000 miles) and the front near side tyre has no profile left at all. Probably for about 2-3 inches from the side of the tyre.

Reading my manual this could be a camber issue but you can't change the camber as it is factory set.

Has anybody experienced this problem and what was the solution? I don't really fancy buying new tyres every year.

Some garages would say, you are going too fast around Roundabouts, or too many right turns...

I do not joke... it has been said :nenau
:doh

Could be camber but more likely to be excessive toe in with unequal adjustment on the track rods causing more wear on one side or even a bent track rod.

In my experience the camber if it is the cause is often quite vissible when you look at the vehicle from the front assuming that your ride height is the same on both sides as it should be. Small differences in camber tend not to be a problem. Get a full steering geometry check that should identify the problem. F1 Autocentres did mine and the check was free as they supplied a pair of tyres and the tracking adjustment charge was quite reasonable especially as they were well corroded and needed heat to adjust them.

Hi glad to see you back, outside edge wear is usually caused by too much toe in, but this does usually affect both front tyres, but not being familiar with Patrols this may not be the case, what I can tell you is that once an edge has worn away there is no stopping it as you now have a tyre with different rolling radius's so the good tread will cover x mtrs and the worn tread will cover the same but as it is smaller it will scrub so accentuating the wear, and wear out very quickly, hope that makes sense, it is like putting a worn tyre and a new tyre on a twin axle, most people if asked will say the new tyre will wear quicker than the worn one cos it is taking more load but it is quite the opposite, the new will cover more ground than the old but they are both revolving at the same rate so the worn will wear very fast, Rick

Thank you everybody.

After the rebuild the tracking was checked and everything was fine. Which suprised me a little bit as almost every part on the car had been dismantled cleaned and put back together.

I have changed the worn out tyre with my spare as that is less worn. Will have to look for two new tyres and will have the tracking checked/adjusted when I have those installed.

Could somebody tell me if it is true or an urban myth that the outside edge on the tyres wears quicker on the Patrols anyway? This should be due to the angle te tyre is under when cornering. It seems to lean over and roll more on the edge in a corner.

It is good to back Rick! Just in the last stages of building new garages doors so the Patrol can actualy fit into the garage! :doh

Outer & Inner edge tyre wear.

Thank you everybody.

I do not know specifically about Patrols but I have noticed on vehicles with wider tyre and wheel options this issue becomes more visible with the wider profiles. Even more so with a lower aspect ratio tyres.
If there is an option I choose the higher aspect ratio - better ride, tyres last longer and cost less. OK so you might loose a bit of steering feel but if that matters why buy 4x4 go for a street racer.

As an aside the camber and caster angles are not generally equal on both sides. Mercedes design in a tendency to pull to the left on right hand drive models and to the right on left hand drive versions. This is done on the basis that if you fall asleep at the wheel or loose concentration you will not drift into oncoming traffic. In the UK we tend to have two way roads with a heavy road camber to drain off water this means you are rarely driving on a flat level surface.

One of the front tyres was down to the metal mesh so time to have them changed. Whilst at it I might as well change all the tyres as they are either worn on the outer edge or cracking from old age. So now the Patrol has got 4 new tyres.

At the same time the tracking was checked which was waayyyy off. The Patrol needs a toe in of about 1mm mine was 13mm, so not suprisingly that the tyres wear out on the edge.

When I had the tracking of our Jeep done last year it made a huge difference to the "feel" of the steering and cornering. Its fine now with even tyre wear plus I swop front to rear around every 6k miles to even the wear up.

just had 2 new boots on front of t2 and the tracking done and it feels a lot better.
the 2 old boots have gone on my other t2.
