Hi all, two questions for you, I've just got two u j s from miller's and they have the grease nipple in one of the cups and not in the main body as shown in the website photo, has anyone used this type and what kind if grease shall I fill them with. Can I use the red RG2 which is used on motorcycle suspension parts ?? Thanks

Did you get the Toyo ones?

Done mine recently and they were a pig first time round by I'm now confident that I could do them again with ease, check out what was left of the roller bearings in one of my cups below!!!!!!!

Hi mate, yes got the toyo ones the same as in the picture. Did you use a press and any tips for me as your experienced with them. Is there just the one joint on the rear prop shaft and will I loose gear oil when I pull it out ?? Cheers john

The bearing is held in place by the circlip.
Remove it then tap the eye with a soft faced hammer, they will slide out, you may have to scrape any crap out of the eye, the circlip usually shifts most of it.
Hold your hand over the circlip, they like to fly away:doh
Google it I am sure there will be a video somewhere

Many years ago (in the land of the Hillman Imp) I was advised by a mechanic (remember them?) friend to use 140 EP gear oil rather than grease as this penetrates the needle rollers better & flushes out the micro particles that the grease can't.
The original set of UJ's (fully maintained using grease) typically lasted less than 40K, the replacement set (using 140EP) were still going strong when I sold it @ 160K.
Haven't got any nipples on 3L (thanks to penny-pinching by Renault?) so can't do anything now LOL. I dread to think what damage I'm doing every time I go through water or deep mud.

Yes a few tips!!!! That should save you having a nightmare like I did haha

Firstly, use a press or a vice, you're more likely to have or have a friend that has a vice, Use an old socket that you don't mind damaging that is just a little smaller than the size of the cup on the old UJ, obviosuly remove any old circlips first with a good set of needle-nosed circlip pliers like these;

Put the socket and the UJ in the Vice and twist away until the cap you have the socket on falls free into the center at this point MAKE SURE YOU DON'T PUSH THE UJ THE OTHER SIDE OUT OF ITS HOLE :eek::eek::eek:

It's important you don't do this or you'll have a nightmare pushing it back in to remove it and may end up having to angle grind it out like I did

The UJ's come pre-greased BTW so you don't need to fill them before fitting, if you do for whatever reason want to top them up, secure the caps or you'll find when you inject it the caps will all fly off and you'll loose all the needle bearings like I did, if you do lose any needle bearings or damage the cups then PM me as I've got a half knackered brand new UJ in the toolbox that I can break for bits to save you buying another one

Refitting is the reverse of removal, just use 2 sockets and push against each other equally, you'll understand it when you come to do it. Make sure you file the holes out nice with a round file getting rid of any burrs before putting the new ones back on

If you jack the car up from the rear, you won't lose any gear box oil either :thumb2

Any issues while your doing it PM me and I'll drop you my mobile number :thumb2

Thanks for the advice mate and for taking the time to type all that :bow. I did the job today but when I pressed out the bush on the one side I still couldn't get the other side out because I noticed that the cups are in fact wider on the old joints but it's noting that the grinder didn't sort out. Looks like they were the originals and done 85k with no movement so was beginning to wounder if I was wasting my time so still changed them and pumped them full of grease put it all back together and I'm well pleased as the rumbling when under load has gone. While I had my hands dirty I pinched up a front wheel bearing, adjusted handbrake and did a full service so I'm feeling a bit proud of myself. Thanks again for your help. Mini filter clean next :augie. Any tips on that one if it's even got one. 2004 terrano ????? John
