The tyres on our SL are due for replacement as they are 14 years old with over half the tread left - they suffer a bit of vibration for the first 50 miles due standing over the winter.

At last years MoT the age of the tyres was mentioned.

At present the rubber consists of Pirelli Zero Rosso 245/45W x 17 fitted to 8.5J rims. Ideally I would like to replace them with a tyre that gives the steering a little less of the floaty feel that the R129 has due to its old W124 based suspension design.

Can anyone here recommend a tyre make / design that would make the steering a bit heavier or make the car more responsive? Not sure if I could fit a lower profile tyre without messing up the speedometer accuracy.

You could look an commercial van tyres, they have a ticker side wall and stiffer, the the weight. May work

There is a thought

That's interesting but suspect they would not do the speed rating I need, gives me a thought though you can pay extra on some makes of tye to have a kerbing strip this might have a similar effect to the higher ply rating of a commercial van tyre.

Back in the 1960's you would fit Michelin X tyres as they were renown for giving heavy steering.
