hello i have a 3 tdi terrano, i heard a whistling noise when accelerating hard, it is only there when i really boot it, i looked and seen that a small black vacuum hose had come of the air filter pipework, i replaced it but i still get a whistling when accelerating hard...with a small hesitation of power when reaching about 5K revs.then it clears....any ideas? other than that its great!

Has this issue only just been noticed, or could it have always been there?
How long have you had it?
If you have never noticed it before, is there anything that has been changed prior to noticing it.
ie any replacement exhaust parts?

Probably normal.

5k revs?? I rarely pass 3k.

Lol. Mines never seen 5k either. But I do get a whistle under hardish acceleration. This has been mentioned a few time's on here. Could be something to do with having a new exhaust fitted in the past. Nowt to worry about hopefully.

I've always had a wee whistle from my 3.0 so I would say normal, I think the sound of the turbo spooling reverberates a bit through the blower system. Haven't noticed it as much recently though but then I have adjusted my VNT stop so maybe that's taken it away the conditions to create the whistle :nenau

I'm with Fez on the revs though, rarely go above 3k never mind any higher. 5k is getting close to redline if I remember correctly...

iv been getting a whistle around 2.5k rpms. although had a new downpipe fitted before noticing it and clutch is/was iffy. now seems to pull hard without any slip again. wierd

I noticed this on the Mrs motor a little while ago, first time I have heard it and yes only on fairly hard acceleration at around 2.5k revs, but I did have my hearing aid's in at the time and though it was quite loud, driving with out them I can barely hear it, asked the Mrs as she could hear it and she said never heard it before, except when I am driving, but then she has a feather for a right foot, had a good look around under the bonnet but could see nothing untoward, ic hoses good and tight and no oil to be seen so not going to worry about it, Rick

5K revs:eek::eek: the 3L either starts the red line higher up in the rev range or your right in the red:augie the 2.7's start to red line at at 4500rpm but anything over 4K & you can feel the power dropping off, the highest I take mine is 3750rpm:rolleyes:

sorry everyone i meant at about 3k revs then power comes back in about 4k

I would have gone exhaust downpipe flexi on this one but based on the rev ranges that doesn't fit however I'm unsure the difference with the 2.7 and the 3.0

Did a wee test in the Trol today while out and went right up to just over 3.5k revs with no noticeable drop in power so, assuming your whistle isn't the noise I'm thinking of, I would check all the intercooler and turbo pipes to see if there's a loose one - I know I had a loose intercooler pipe when I bought the Trol.

BUT

I have fiddled with my 3.0 a wee bit as I've blanked the EGR and adjusted the VNT stop to suit and I also have a straight through exhaust fitted. So my 3.0 isn't running standard like yours :nenau

Just a reminder, you won't hear turbo whistle when just reving it stationary, you need to be in gear and driving and revving it, to get the max power out of it... that's when the whistle is likely to happen.

This is what I did when KwikFit fitted the first flexi down pipe, which had the turbo whistle. It came in at around 2500 revs as I accelerated, didn't need to go over 35mph...
I took the tech out and it happened, I suggested they swapped the exhaust for another make, which they did, we then took it out.... silent.
The guys at KwikFit Brownhills West Midlands, were excellent, they took ownership of the problem and followed it through. I of course emailed head office... credit where credit is due.:thumb2

Just thought I would throw that in...:thumb2
