I'm told that to remap my ECU, it needs to come out to replace or reprogramme the chip. (1998 Terrano 2 TD intercooler automatic). It must not have a diagnostic plug as later vehicles. Has anyone done this sort of thing to improve mpg?
I live in Burnley so going hundreds of miles is uneconomical. I have discounted the smple resistor cheap trick box from ebay as threads have explained why.
I have the K & N induction kit on its way so that may improve things a bit but I traded a 4.2 1993 straight six diesel Patrol in for this vehicle and I'm a bit dissappointed in 21 mpg!
Any good advice please?
 
I've investigated the remap thing on this age of truck and basically it's not worth it. BUT dont worry you can fit a tuning box to great effect. I've got the Tunit II on mine and it's awesome, but pricey. You can get another box off ebay for about a hundred quid and was on here recently. It produced top results too:thumbs
As you've got the auto version I think there's a lot to be said for light weight boots as the slush box will tend to hold the gears too long. Ease off the foot a bit and it'll change up earlier thus saving a bit more fuel.

This has been debated long and hard and theres advantages and disadvantages all round.

For me personally the conclusion is a chip/tuning box (decent one not an ebay cheapo) achieves close enough to the same result as a remap at a fraction of the convenience and is adjustable :thumb2
 
power box

I had power box fitted at a BMW garage,went in for air con re gasing. The owner said he had just fitted a power box on is brother in laws nissan T2. He said what a difference it made, more power in the rev range. No flat spots its not sold as a fuel saving device. £350 fitted. mine had to be solderd in place some do just plug in under seat.

DIESEL PERFORMANCE BOX VP 37. my Uncle had a 2005 3 litre T2 mine was like sh*t off a shovel compared to his.

mine was from ebay £100 and love it think its just as good as the tunit box but a lot cheaper.

agreed seen fitted one on a Jeep same as mine and it was £87 from diesel express via ebay :thumb2

is yours the one with the row of little switches when you take off the end panel?

ps by cheapo i meant the solder this in for £9.99 and youll be able to do 150mph and get 75mpg ones.

Thanks for the advice. I was zoning in on the Speedbox model but a bit cautious cos it comes from Italy so thinkin the instruction might be a challenge. At this stage I dont know what diesel pump I have or where its connector is, assuming these have to be accessed to fit the device. I already have sussed the trick to get up to speed gently then lift of to make the box drop into overdrive top. My son has driven it and he gets 20 mpg (with my diesel, you know how kids work) but I can get 23 mpg. Anyway, I'm goin to fit the K & N kit first then test it. If I do 2 things at once i wont know which has done what.
Also I have found that the nearside front caliper is sticking very sligtly Tried a bit of penetrating oil on the piston ends and copper grease in the pads edges but its no better. All other alignment parameters and wheel bearings are checked out but hands off the car drifts slightly to the left. Is the real cure a new caliper?

Sliders will be sticking. You can buy these separately from the likes of ebay and Milners. Strip it and replace.

i bought mine from that company fitting is in english but i can only say how easy it is with bosch pump if urs is bosch then the connector for the pump is the big round plug just above the pump two wires on that then two wires to the ecu then adjust the tunning screw till the engine sounds happy then go and play as it will feel a different truck can easly pull away in 4th at 1400rpm now hope that helps
