What size of trolley jack would I need to lift a Terrano to get on to some axle stands?

A big one!!!!!!!!!!!! seriously if you want to say lift the front end high then a 5 tonne minimum with high lift, expect to pay £150 plus, your £20 Aldi 2 tonne jacks will not lift a T2 front end, bearing in mind the whole car is less than 2 tonnes, I have no idea where they get their numbers from, Rick
 
I've got a sealey 5 ton trolley jack.
Too big to fit in the boot but perfect for use on the drive.
 
I use the Alloy one from CostCo it was around the £90 mark had it about 4 /5 years now plus I also have a Bradbury that's around 40 years old now.
 
I bought a 5t one at the local motor factors. Was about 120 €, in a promotion.
It is not so much the load capacity you need, but the height. The more load, the higher it goes. Same for axle stands.

Had the same experience with cheap jacks as solarman. And would you really trust your car and your garage floor to a £20 jack made by the lowest bidding factory in China?
 
over 30 year old sealy used in my garage daily when working a 3 ton does the job,had to re oil it last year for the first time.i carry a small 3 ton in boot for emergencies.

I've got a 2 tonne 4x4 rated one in black, Halfords Professional, think I got it when it was on a bank holiday offer kind of thing and paid £30-40 quid :nenau

Still gets the car off the floor even with 33" boots on small enough to keep in the boot (just about) wouldn't go anywhere without it though
 
I have a 3 tonne high lift one from Machine Mart, and the load spreader beam for our other cars.

Slides under the rear diff, circle of ply in the jack cup to avoid point loading, lift as high as you want, I can get my axle stands on the highest position if safe to do so.
For the front, I tend to lift under the lower wishbone and axle stand the chassis, but I use a block of timber on the jack, and I am aware that the jack could slip as the angle of the wishbone is not horizontal, I would not remove a wheel or go under with a jack in this position unless an axle stand is under the chassis.
Any removed wheel is slid under the chassis too with blocks of wood to reduce the potential drop, or scratches to the wheel.:thumb2

I use a 3 ton sealey jack, cost about 130 pounds and came with some free small jack stands.
 
I've heard more people about using a wheel under the chassis to take the weight of the car in case of a drop.

But wouldn't the rim just bend? Wheels are not made for a load from the side I think.
I just use axle stands, never work on the car if only supported by a jack.
 
Bought mine second hand from local blacksmith type guy retiring. Has a nice wide stance will lift to just over 90cm which is more than I am likely to need with a pair of Clarke 6ton axle stands.
Not the sort of thing I can put in the boot though.

Looks very similar to mine, had it 30 years inherited it from my dad, goodness knows how long he had it, it has just started leaking a bit so got to do the seals as soon as I get time, it has a two stage lift, goes up quick no load so one pump gets it in contact with the axle then it is multi pump to lift, Rick

My dad was an engineer all his life and never threw anything useful away some place in the barn I have a box full of just such seals, Oh and many in old jacks like that were leather so can make your own, Rick

Does the Halfords jack require a separate add-on tube to get the required height? The Screwfix 4x4 version comes with such a tube apparently?

What sort of lift height am I looking for in a jack?

If I'm not taking the wheels off, I use my ramps so much easier :thumbs
