Now that my new intercooler has arrived, I'm looking forward to getting it installed.

I was considering reversing the flow of the intercooler so that air flowed into the front, then out of the back... One silicone 'U' bend into the intake manifold.

While researching wether this was possible, I came accross this video... https://youtu.be/CFyjN75b3b4

At about 2min, 30 the guy describes the 'unique feature' of their kit and it sort of answers my questions.


Has anybody else done this or have any thoughts on it?
 
Can't watch the vid just now but a quick search of the Patrol 4x4 forum throws up a lot of scepticism as to whether they're worth the money.

My understanding is the benefits are meant to be it shortens the inlet length so a quicker spool up and having it straight out of the intercooler and into the turbo you don't have as much heat soak from the air flowing through a hot metal pipe post intercooler. Again there's a bit of scepticism as to whether there's any real noticeable benefit and I've got to admit I have my doubts that there'll be a huge difference :nenau
 
I'm not too fussed about there product, more so the principal of reversing the flow.

Might make the under bonnet pipe work look a little neater too. :lol

Generally speaking the Nissan designers would have considered that during pre-production. It might be a cost issue but if real benefits were to be had they would have designed pipework accordingly.
 
Yeah, I thought that too!

But on paper it makes sense to have shorter pipework! (Just like it makes sense to have a catch can.... But I think that one is down to cost!)
 
The fact that your new ic is larger and tig welded will mean improved performance regardless of the hose swap, but your idea to re-do the pipe work is interesting Jay.
 
It seems to be a bit of a 'Marmite' discussion topic on the Aussie forums.

I bit more research before I commit I rekon!
 
I guess I'm more concerned about the MAF sensor reading differently too...

I've certainly not heard of this before and not very learned on the ZD30 anyway, sounds interesting though, let us know how you get on if you go with it with plenty pics :naughty
 
My only concern, would be all the tight bends that the one on the video seemed to be introducing... I have not seen the real setup, so not sure how many bends it does have to start with, but I do think keeping the pipes as straight and direct, with as few joins as possible is always going to be the best option, as that way, the air naturally spends less time in the tubes, and therefore picks up less heat anyway.
