I'm getting an increasingly louder squeal seemingly coming from the most rest of my 3.0 Terrano. It only happens when in gear and when I lift off the accelerator. As soon as I touch the accelerator pedal or declutch the noise goes. I'm wondering if any power or torque being delivered to the rear is tightening something up so there's no squeal and as soon as I lift off the power something loosens and starts the squeal. Have topped up the LSD oil by 1/2 litre as slight leak on drain plug.

Any ideas?

Rather than topping diff oil up it might be better to replace so that you know it's all nice n clean. Give you chance to put some ptfe tape on the drain plug too to seal it up.

Nothing daft like a exhaust bracket creeking is it?

As Jim says replace the diff oil for proper LSD stuff, on these later diffs I have heard some really bad noises that were cured by a simple oil change, Rick

I replaced the oil with proper LSD oil about 18 months back and topped up with the same. I checked the level today with the finger in the hole and seemed ok. Surprised it topped up to brim.

Definitely bare metal on metal rotating sound. Also wondering if universal joint on prop needs greasing via nipple.

Unless your uj's have been replaced then the original factory fitment on your age truck didn't have grease nipples. Not really sure how you could safely test the uj's for the noise either.

Had this on Grandads's!!!!

Go out for a run and come on and off the power harshly to make the noise, but whilst you do it put your hand on the transfer lever and pull it back and forward slightly and see if the tone changes

Easy to test prop UJ's, first have a good look at em, any sign of rust from the moving parts or play in the joint hen they are bad, if you have doubts then drop the 4 bolts to the diff and check the two joints for smoothness and play, a bad joint will be knotchy or have play, you probably do not have greasers on yours, Rick

Have you changed any seat belt bolts recently ?

A long shot but have you touched the seat belt bolts at all near the transmission tunnel ?

check UJs.

theres a cowel or whatever its called at the back of the gearbox where the propshaft attached to that can come loose and make a similar sound. Hit it back in place with some wood + hammer. I can try and get a picture if my description is not clear.

Good thinking batman :thumb2

Interestingly I noticed the squeal happens in reverse with accelerator or not. Today in the wet the noise had disappeared. Now someone told me it's the thruster bearing in the clutch and that the noise travels so as to make appear it's from the rear. The bearing has been knocking from two years now and was told don't bother with it.

Had prop shaft UJ replaced earlier this year and has a nipple on it. Checked there is no play.
