Do not agree that changing the oil can cause damage unless you use the wrong oil and even then sceptical, however dip your oil, if it is nice clear red then all is OK, if it is less than clear or even brown then change it now and ask yourself why it may have been overheated to cause this, but do have to add that stuff is changing at an alarming rate and I am not up with the latest technology, Rick

I would have to agree with Rick. although as pointed out to me recently there are certain vehicles that are totally sealed so wont allow fluid changes.

Have you got a service manual? pretty sure there would be an "fluid change" timetable ie at 20,000 mile intervals, or something to that effect.
Also check around the transmission and see if there is a bung that would allow fluid changes, look for a dipstick in the engine bay too - both of those would tell me A) you can check fluid levels B) if you can check the level then that is to indicate you need to top up or change the fluid.

cheers
Dave

ATF change

My 325i BMW had a sealed for life gearbox so I left it alone.

If the vehicle has a dip tube & a drain plug then no way can new fluid damage anything.

As has been said if it is nice and pink leave it alone.

If its Grey - thats due to water contamination.

If it is brownish or smells in any way burnt then I would change it if it is possible. Then you need to now if it has a filter - usually a large pan filter in the gearbox sump.

Oh not sure But garage man had quick look and he couldn’t find a dip stick

Is there a dipstick tube with a sealed cap that you have to snap off ? Very few manufacturers fit a dip stick but you often get the tube only.
If there is a tube you need the correct length of dipstick to check it.

If there is no such tube then it will either have a level plug that you access from underneath or if it is like the newer Mercs there is a special filling pipe that connects to the drain plug that acts like a weir to top it up.

Update

Been in to Nissan for software update Didn’t help my problem of stalling in reverse when cold start Asked them re transmission fluid Told they don’t advise change of transmission fluid for my model Wanted to keep looking for what causing problem but it’s not so bad I want to throw money at them to learn more about cars they should know everything about lol

Have you tried this ??

Have you tried starting it in neutral, engage D even if you want to reverse out. Then after say 20 seconds at most pop it into R to see if it still stalls. I suspect that there is more engine load when you engage R as opposed to D.

You do not say what the mileage is - this could be a factor if it's Starship due to wear on all sorts of things.
