Anyone know if there is a difference in the 2.7 tdi and 2.4 petrol transfer boxes.i cant select 4wd low.also can it be removed without gearbox.
other than that the ole girl going really well now.

Have you checked the linkage? Are you defo stationary when trying to stick it in
I've lost low box sometimes after a heavy landing :augie
A quick twatting underneath with a suitable rock usually cures it :sly
It can also happen with broken engine mounts or gear or mounting.

def stationary.ive pulled it that hard i thought selector might snap.but ive not tried your technical term twatting it with something heavy:lol.will remove selector guide plate and see if it helps.but dont think we will have any white stuff for a while yet

just been out and looked at the Mistral transfer box on the floor and compared it to a 2.4 petrol complete box sitting on the chassis and as far as I can see externally they are the same, Rick

I can't imagine why they would be different, the ratios should be the same as each other.

If the diffs are different on the petrols and diesels then this would confirm it.
Unless the ratios on the main box are different.

There won't be 2 areas of difference.

yes i did push down before pulling it (that sounds wrong).i have a petrol gear/transfer boxes on my 96 2.7 td the gear ratio is def different.ive found a couple of trans boxes for sale but from petrol.i just thought if they can be removed without gearbox removal probably be easier than twatting about with my existing transferbox.

get the one from rick then mate :thumb2

yes the transfer box comes of separate, no need to interfere with the front suspension, it is heavy so some very good muscles are needed, Rick

Probably got a few transfer boxes if you need one :D

looking at the transfer box and the lever that combines the move from 2 to 4wd and hi to lo
does it look feasible to seperate the functions, ie have a twin lever transfer.

heard of it done on other transfers, means can get 2lo if shunting on high traction surfaces
so avoiding wind up but gaining the torque doubling.

obviously care needed with throttle as double the torque going to just rear axle.

i'd also be interested to learn how big the terrano transfer is say against the shogun
unit which of course has more function ie 2hi, 4hi open centre diff (road use) 4hi locked
centre and 4lo locked centre. the current pathfinder has a similar soft 4wd mode in hi.

reason i ask is my mk4 has fixed hubs so front prop spins all the time next to but not
biting the dog clutch of 4wd, seems such a waste.....so close to fulltime 4wd yet still
a traditional part timer.

.

I could be misunderstanding you but the T2 box is in essence a standard unit with final drive exiting at the rear, it then goes into the transfer box and either goes to rear wheels only or in 4 wheel also via chain drives the front prop which then locks the front hubs, or the same but in low ratio all on one lever, Rick

yes on reading your post I got it wrong, and I think the answer is no as there is only one shaft going into the box from the selector lever which covers all functions, Rick

so the function 'split' is in side the box.

i guess some do this on the outside with a slave lever/bracket
which can be split and a new second lever added along with
changes to the vehicles floor. its a yank thing.

i suspect the nearest analagy is the old landy red and yellow
levers, mind even they effect in other in standard use as i recall

YES it can be done... :thumb2
If you have Manual front hubs, just don't select them......
2 wheel drive low ratio..... Simples.....:thumb2
BUT you will still have to stop to select High setting. :nenau

cheers, yeah considered that, except mk4 is fixed hubs,
could go manuals, and give all that front end a rest too!
