hi guys we are away at moment in not so sunny france with the caravan in tow having prob with over heating. on the flat its ok but show it a hill and the gauge heads to the red but cools down again on the the other side of hill. not boiled over yet. any ideas welcome before i get green flag out to take it to froggy garage i was thinking of thermostat or water pump. its not used any water

could be the stat opening late, easy to change, what is the state of the fins on the rad, many fall off dramatically reducing cooling power, Rick

can yoou hear fan, the viscous should have a healthy roar.

re the gauge how high does it go, as they are not that accurate.
if you have coolant it can boil well above 100 degree C especially
with the pressure.

whats the ambient temp?

The stat could even be knackered so worth changing as a cheap starter for 10. Had you not said the weather wasn't so sunny, if your van is a heavy one I'd say I'm not too surprised it being France, but if its UK-type weather and your load isn't too great it didn't ought to be misbehaving.

The health roar you mention, does it come & go?

First time I heard it it sounded like my clutch was slipping, rev counter stayed steady, I was on a hill, not towing temperature was steady 9oc.

Does it come & go or does it roar all the time?

when fan clutch engages to cool rad, fan will roar till temp drops then disengage again.

If you listen for the first couple of minutes starting from cold, give the motor a few revs, that is fan roar, keep the revs steady and after a short while the roar stops, that is the viscous hub working it always does this from starting but once running it should come on when the motor starts to get higher than normal temp, it is controlled externally by a bi metallic coiled spring on the front of the fan hub, as it gets hot it opens a valve to operate the fan, sometimes the spring becomes detached, Rick

thanx guys outside temp was a bit warm about 18 to 19
when i first start off i get the fan roar but when its been getting hot cant say that i have noticed it
caravan is bog standard normal weight one
on one long hill temp went right up to red

should have stopped to check if fan was running? but hindsight is a marvellous thing LOL

If it happens again, cool it the old fashioned way.....


Open the car windows, and put the interior heater on to full, high speed fan, aim the side vents to blow through the open window. :doh

When cooled down, stop and wring out the sweat from your clothes. :thumb2
