Prompted by another thread about dolly towing I have these questions for the assembled :augie
Can I tow using a towing bar type dolly, the type that bolts to the underside of the towed car and then attaches to your tow bar? The towed car has no mot, tax or insurance.
Secondly can I tow my old cortina from my house to the garage that's doing some work on it, by tow rope. So another driver in it to operate the brakes. No mot but could be insured for the day.
If anyone can get pulled by plod it's me

one of my neighbours works for a recovery firm , will ring him ...... 2 ticks

the only legal option is a trailer, with all 4 wheels off the road There are many interpretations and opinions regarding this but, it is the only legal way.

If you are unsure and want to be 'legal' phone the Police and ask to be put through to the traffic division, if they say you can do it, make a note of who said it and the time and date, because if they say otherwise and you get caught it will be your only defense :thumb2

And never, ever put the hazard warning lights on when your towing (on either car) :doh another 3 points on your license offense and a reason to stop you and look for other 'issues'

Bottom line is, unless it has a complete set, tax/MoT/insurance, then its illegal unless you are "recovering it".

Even then I suspect the strict interpretation of the law would be that you should be "recovering it" from a breakdown (as opposed to from your garage) so again it should have a full set.

I'd say you either need to do it in the dark or "book an MoT" :naughty

My friendly local garage is an agent for several of the national breakdown companies and has always said if I have a problem with any vehicle, just log a call on the one I have covered and they will collect whatever I want LOL

Digging into the deep dark reccess of training school questions over 20 years ago !!!! there is a definite answer to this one.

Im pretty certain that if the item being towed is made up of parts that create a motor vehicle ie its got seats , engines, brakes etc etc its still a motor vehicle albeit under tow and as such the person sitting in it must be qualified for that class.

the argument always was when does removal of components mean it ceases to be a motor vehicle eg if the engine is removed. The answer is I dont know BUT it its not a motor vehicle it becomes a towed trailer and must comply with a ll the relevant regs.

As advised earlier car transporter the best bet :thumb2

As far as everyone, including bussiness you see out and about not complying with either of the above, or the recovery criteria, through well intentioned ignorance of the law or not giving a whatever, theyre quite possibly in error :nenau

Until they actually show me the section of the RTA which says they can do it that way (and Im happy to be proved wrong cos its a longgggg time since I even thought about this) I'll stand by that :thumb2

Cheers guys, looks like a ruddy trailer needed now then:doh
I can't do the mot trick on this one Mr Luvgluv, as it's not going to an mot garage nor does it "look" like it ever had an mot :lol
It's in the middle of severe body mods :naughty
