can anyone please tell me how to tell top dead centre for adjusting tapets thanks

tappets

I wish I could mate. Thats inside the engine isnt it ???
Good luck with that one.

I have'nt done the tapets on my T2 yet  but when i've done them in the past 0n other cars e put the car into gear & pushed it back or forwards whilst watching the rockers come up & down as you can see the point where they hit their max lift & at this point I adjust the tapets

I always remember my father's method, "the rule of nine"
When No 1 tappet is compressed adjust no 8, when no 2 is compressed adjust no 7. No 3 compressed adjust No 6 etc
always worked for him...

You are so right in what your saying rustic

You should have a pointer on the timing cover to the right, next to the bottom pulley, turn the engine until the notch in the bottom pulley aligns with the pointer.

You could also get TDC roughly, with the rocker cover removed turn the engine until the rockers on number 4 are rocking i.e. exhaust valve just closing & inlet just opening.
The Tappets can also be adjusted using this system, when the valves at number 4 are rocking adjust number 1 cylinder valves, when number 2 cylinder valves are rocking adjust number 3 valves, when the valves are rocking on cylinder 1 adjust number 4 and finally number 3 rocking adjust cylinder number 2s valves.

Sorry Brianbrianyi, Long days,

I think when you run a petrol you forget about diesels.

Mav.

Bed time now
