The Trol's rear bumper is a 3 piece, centre section and two corner sections.

Had noticed the driver's side corner section was a bit loose when I bought the Trol and after my last session at the offroad site it had been a bit worse. So I made the decision to take the corner's off at least and go from there...

Driver's side corner off - the only thing holding it on was the screws on the back of the wheel arch and only 1 of the rear points as all the rest had broken

Support bracket off

Originally planned to keep the aluminium centre step but decided to take it off too and think it looks much better without it.

Departure angle definitely improved, the towbar crossmember will hit anything before the rest of the rear ;)

Got a double towbar step that I'll bolt behind the recovery loop which is being replaced with a nato hitch now I've seen the back of the loop

Aussie's had said the factory recovery point was nothing more than a beefed up tie down but I thought they were exaggerating

Looks good from the front...

Turn it around and it's obvious that the only thing holding the loop to the plate is the welds on the front - this is a 3 ton vehicle we've got here :doh

The recovery point hole centres are the same as a nato hitch and I know Nissan supplied the Trols in some of the Arab countries with nato hitches there as standard :thumb2

Time to cut those rear quarters matey :sly
That WILL get you more departure for sure :naughty

Na bud, thinking about making/getting made some tubular corners to bolt onto the existing points (seen some on the Patrol4x4 forum) :thumb2

Can't believe how much more departure angle I've got with my trimmed back end.
Working on a full steel heavy duty one at work over the next couple of weeks.
Hopefully it will look similar to the afn one you can buy for daft money.

I'd still give it a trim and weld about where I marked in red.

I think it would be rude not to trim those corners now you have stripped its bumper off:D

Haha, we'll see :lol

This is the kind of thing I'm thinking of, although I won't be putting the aluminium step back on.

Like the look of that.
Wonder what it would look like on the terrano :naughty

I will ask a question, is the only point of support on the plate where the two tubes are welded too, or is there some bracing from the chassis?
Otherwise it will be knocked out of shape on the lightest contact.

Agreed. The rear quarters are far more likely to get a cuffing than the centre line area .

Yes, although that plate bolts straight onto the chassis rail through some existing M10 captive nuts. It would still provide more protection than the plastic corners do though.

There is the option of attaching at the rear of the wheel arch where the plastic corner attached, though that's only onto the body, or I could connect into the rear body mount... :nenau

Will probably be a while before I get round to doing anything though

Trol porn  :bow

I hope Alex doesn't see this lol

Ooh yes I like this thread, good move too sir!

I would get some sort of bar made up for the rear for sure :sly make sure it bolts directly to the chassis and keep it as high as possible :thumb2

In the meantime take a wire wool brush to that under stuff followed by some tough paint (hammerite my favourite) :naughty

Nope don't want a full rear bar, just something for the corners ;)

Wouldn't be connecting to anything else except the chassis, existing holes at the rear of the wheel arch would only be for extra support. You can actually see the chassis bolt holes I'd be using in Makeitfit's pic - the two bolt heads near the end of the chassis rail (just shows they didn't change much on the basics when they designed the Y61s!).

It's not under stuff there bud, it's actually the metallic body paint. It'll get a clean to take the mud off but I won't be doing anything else until I know what I'm doing with the corners (black hammerite will probably be used though).

Sounds good dude, the only worry is how soft they might be, can't you run a full square bar across the rear, so perhaps not a curved bumper like mine but similar to makeitfits front bumper with some shaped edges? :nenau

I'm getting far too excited about this :naughty

the tow eye is ripe for filling the recess with good high amp weld to give it the strength it needs.

Whether it's a full length bar or just corners the problem is still gonna be that the chassis attachment potentially stops at those bolt holes I've identified. If I'm putting a nato hitch in the centre of the rear chassis bar I don't want it projecting out too far as it'll get in the way when I'm using the tow ball - that's why I don't want a rear bar.

If I cut the body back a bit that would give me access to the chassis further round the corner but I've got a feeling it's double skinned there so I'll need to weld a plate in to fill the gap.

Remember Pete's is just bolt on corners too ;)

It could be a while before I do anything about it as I'll ideally need to get a welder and learn to weld first! :lol

Did think about that bud but I've kinda lost faith in it after reading into it on the Trol forums... also nato hitch is already ordered :augie
