if the price is right it makes more sense....the Midland seems popular :)

Im just looking there too.
I know nothing about Cb's so whats the easyest to start off with,

the midland 38 ect as they sujest?

or some thing better / diferent?

Good rig choice that ,get 4" springer arial and large magmount will also need SWR meter and patch lead.

Have got a cubby hole the grey plastic one ready slotted for rig free plus postage to anyone.

Small grey plastic hole in front of low box lever at bottom of centre dash.Later models all brown plastic 1 piece

have currently got a midland 38 but i bought it second hand so i dont know what abuse it has had before i bought it.
when it works its very clear and so simple to use.
gonna have one last attempt to sort it out.
have been told to add an extra earth from the antenna to the body to see if it will sort it out.

I got my midland off ebay with a magmount aerial.
Wired it up stuck aerial on roof, sorted:thumbs
Never bothered with a swr:nenau and all is fine.
Cant see any good putting an earth lead to the mount. Its got to be seperate surely. It doesnt work like a car aerial I dont think anyway:cool:

well i gave up trying to sort out my cb and bought a midland 98 brand new:thumb2cost me £45 delivered as i had some e bay vouchers so its a bargain:clap
not sure where i'm gonna mount this one:nenauhave got the current one roof mounted but i might go for the cubby box mounting with this one so i can see the display a bit better.

Ahem! speaking as a CB-er from the very olden days:doh......actually it does. Like most aerials it needs a ground plane, the bigger and flatter the better (car radio aerials are a bit less fussy because of the frequency they operate at I think and the strength of the signals they are receiving).

The ideal fixing for a CB aerial is through the metal in the middle of the roof - that gives the best ground plane of all. But other metal-mounted locations are almost as good (wing etc.). Mag mount is always second best and the 'extra earth' I suspect is suggested because theres no metal-to-metal contact otherwise - but then that doesn't really matter if you aren't looking to talk to people 5-10 miles away. For convoy use a magmount is fine.

And in the olden days, did you have problems in the UK with Italians who used high power amps so they could speak to family back home? We had woeful problems with our Italian chippy owners using amps and directional aerials on their base stations, couldn't talk to to the person in a car beside you because the signal just got swamped.

That's why you have to take Exams to get a ham license. You should then be able to run your station without causing problems and if you do you should then be able to sort it out.

Jim,back then the only ones who could afford the amps and directional aerials were the Italians and they didn't have any regard for other CB users, so long as they could speak to the family back in Italy for free. We had a guy who had his chippy about a mile from my house and when he was on he just wiped everything in the area, including TV's. Don't know what it's like now as I haven't owned a CB for years but I am considering getting one again. What would probably be of more use though, would be a couple of good quality two way radios with a decent range.

what he says:thumb2
my antenna is mounted on the roof bar which is plascitc coated so as you say there is no metal contact for the ground.don't really think that was the issue i just think my old rig is on its last legs.
iv'e had to repair it once all ready as on of my kids knackered up the channel shift buttons by pressing them into the front of the rig so i can only change channel by the mic buttons.
new one should be here this week so hopefully that will be problem solved.:nenau
