How long would you expect them to last? I notice that it is a very common thing to be mentioned as faulty on here.

Mine was packed up when I got the car, and I replaced it, now 18 months on, it has gone again... I am sure they lasted longer that that, in the good old days...

not sure on shelf life, but id be expecting at least 4/5 years, but as they are so cheap I tend to replace mine sooner than 5 years.

The one in my r3mR was in it when I bought it and it lasted 7 years still working when I sold it.

A decent make branded should last 5 years plus.

Not checked recently but you used to be able to buy ones that failed open rather than closed so no overheating issues when they packed up.

Mine was in the car when I bought it 4 years ago and it was still working fine when I changed it last spring for an 88 degree one (from 82 degree, to get the heater blowing warm more quickly).

Exactly what I did when I replaced mine :) The temp guage only needs to go up by about 1/8th of the way and the blowers are boiling to the point that my beard starts to melt

Mine was from Nissan, I changed it when I first got the car, before I knew that the motor factors round the corner could do them... I have gone for an 88d Blue point one this time, see if it is any better.

I really thought that they all failed open now, I remember the old days where you used to take the housing off, the change the thermostat, and found the top bent in, where someone had done a road side fix with a screwdriver down the rad pipe hole, to jam it open, but the last time I asked, I was told that now they had made them all fail safe... mind you not sure how you do that.

Banshee, I remember reading that at the time... Scary.
